Funded through the Agricultural Environental Stewardship Initiative (AESI), the program has $50,000 available to, it, which will be administered by the Hamilton and Halton conservation authorities. Money wiil be directed to qualified landowners for the impie- mentation of sclectcd best management practices to improve water quality in the Hamilton-Halton watersheds. The initiative will help farmers respond to, specific water quali- ty concemai by providing fmancial and technicsl assistance. Farmers can receive up to $5,000 per project. Working together, the Agricultural Adaptation Council and thse Ontario Farm Environmental Coalition deliver Ontario's portion of program funding. Local funds are being dcivcrcd through the Hamilton-Halton Watershed Stewardship Program, which assista and encourages private landowners to protcct, enhance and rehabilitate creeks, streama and natural arcas. Management practices eligible for AESI funding include: Milkhouse/milking parlour washwater treatmentldisposal, con- structed wetlands for wastewatcr treatment, dlean water diversion, silo leachate control, farm animal restriction to watercourses, sep- tic systemr repair, erosion control structures, fragile land retire- ment, buffer strip establishment, windbreaks andl fertilizer, chem- ical and fuel storage/handlmng. One eligibility requirement will be an Environental Farm Plan (EFP) deemed appropriate through peer review.
