Troy McHarg, Town Clerk Town of Milton NDP seeking federal Utiituiae toi" Iî'tîw By JASON MISNER The Champion 'Me New Democratic Party has done the first and most important thing and that's establishing a standalone federal associa- tion for the Halton Riding. The next big step is to get an NDP feder- ai riding candidate in place for an election that could becalled as early as this spring. On February 26, the association created a new federal riding executive council. Since 1995, it's been a unified provincial and federal riding association but changes to federal electoral financing laws and upcoming federal riding redistribution which would see Halton Hilis removed from the Halton Ridusg to form a new one -has necessitated the need for independent associations. The re-drawn riding would include Milton and northem portions of Burlington and Oakville. Association secretary Mike Druiven said the association will now con- centrate on solidifying its Halton candidate and a few bave expressed interest. 'We've talked to several people and they're thinking about it," he said. "We'l see what happens in the next few weeks." 'Me Liberal and new Conservative Party of Canada Halton federal riding associa- tions have been moving forward. Two candidates, former Oakville Tory Gary Carr and local entrepreneur Peter Duffus, are vying for the Liberal candida- cy. Dean Martin was acclaimed as the ares candidate for the conservatives last month. Mr. Omuiven said there isn't any particu- lar concemn that those two parties have candidates or nominees in place. He does- "We've talked te several people and they're thinking about it. We'li see whist happens in the next few weeks."9 n't thmnk an election will happen soon given the current muling Liberal govem- ment is mired in a money-funneling spon- sorship scanda. "We're trying to get a handle on the rid- ing to start with," he said, noting support bas traditionally been the strongest in north Halton. "Our goal is to increase member- ship and to increase visibility in Halton." Brenda Dolling, the Halton NDP federal candidate in -the 2000 election, said the main thing is ensuring the ridmng associa- tion gets the best quality candidate., "I'm hoping to get two or three nomi- nees," she said, noting she won't be one of them because she'll be moving out of the riding later this year. Both Mr. Drmiven and Ms Dolling feel that new party leader Jack Layton gives the party a good chance at the polIs when an election is called. -He's well spoken and presenits a very balanced point of view," Mr. Druiven said. Added Ms Dolling, "He will do a lot for us here in Halton." Jason Misner can be reached ai jmis- ner@miltoncanadianchampion.com. Showcase' *ito - .more than a Home and Leisure Show!.
