Beware of e-mail scams in area, warn Halton Regional Police Halton Regional Police are reminding tbe public that if some- tbing sounds too good to be truc, il probably is. Reeently, police have received numerous calîs from the public about possible letter and e-mail scams. The majority of the calîs concern e-mails known to police as Nige 'rian/West African letter frauds. These e-mails request an individ- ual's assistance in recovering mil- lions of dollars belonging to the senders tamily overseas. In one of the most popular and reeently received versions, the cuiprit says bis family had to fiee Angola for Spain and in order to retrieve money, hie needs someone to open up a non-resident bank aceount in Spai to have the money trans- ferred. By opening the account, the vie- tim is promised 25 per cent of the fortune. Typically, vicsirns in this type of fraud fmnd thernselves in a web of deception and trickery, often bav- ing to forward the cuiprit tbou- sanda of dollars with no prospect of ever receiving the promised riches. Police say there bave been many variations of tbis scain seen in North America tbrougbout the past few years. Tise safest practice is for recipi- ents to delete the e-mail front tiseir computers or forward it to the Phonebusters National Cail Centre - whicb is a joint partnersbip between the OPP and RCMP - at wafl@pbonebusters.com.
