Photo by GRAHAM PAINE Mayor Gord Krantz (left), Regional Chair Joyce Savoline and Halton EMS director Jim King celebrate the officiai opening of the new EMS station on Childa Drive. Halton s eighth EMS station officially opens By STEPHANIE THIESSEN The Champion Witb Mayor Gord Krantz leading a bois- terous chorus of "Milton EMS is offlcially open," and tben smùppmng a ribbon, Halton's newest emergency medical services station was introduced to, tbe community Thursday afternoon. ('elebrating the station, located at 492 Childs Df, --!ith Mayor Krantz was Regional Chair Joyce Savoline as well as local and regional counicillors, EMS per- sonnel and members of flhc public. In bis address, Mayor Krantz empha- sized tbe importance of an effective EMS. 'It's lie insurance for your car," be said. "You hope you neyer bave need for it, but ifs nice if its there." Tbis is Halton's eigbth EMS station. A nïnth will soon open in Oakville. Ms Savoline said it was important for Halton EMS to continue improving its response timnes, and tbat was one of tbe rea- sons the new station was needed. TbMere's no mystery in bow to do that. Il's witb more personnel and stations," she said. Two vebicles will operate out of tbis sta- tion - one providing 24-hour coverage, seven days a week, and the otber bcbng operational 12 boucs a day, scven days a week. The location is more convemient than its previous one on Nipissing Road - it bas benter access to, Regional Road 25, and there's more room so ambulances can exit the facility quieker and easier. Two factors make a more efficient Halton EMS necessary -an ever increas- iog Milton population and a population that's aging, said Jim King, director of Halton's EMS. In the year 2000, less than 3,000 calîs were received. Last year that figure jumped to almost 7,000. A new feature of the station is an exteri- or public telephone that immediately directs tbe caller to 911 in tbe case tbe ambulances are already out responding 10 colls. One of tbe reasons for tbe chosen loca- tion was its close proximity to Allendale, from wbicb EMS receives frequent colIs, Mr. King said. Special guest Don Miller, travelling from Wasaga Beacb to, attend the ceremnony, took time 10 reminisce about the changes u s , RDM that have corne about in the past seve.ral decades. Mr. Miller was an ambulance supervisor in 1969 when it was stationed at Milton District Hospital. Back tben, tbere wasn't thse luxury of ambulances packed full of equipment. In fact, EMS personnel bad little more than finIt aid training, he said. "We just scooped tbemt up, put tbem in and drove like (mad)," be said, laughing. Holton Region assumed responsibiîity for tbe delbvery of EMS ini Halton in 2000. Stephanie Thiessen can be reached at sthiessen@miltoncanadianchampion.com. R.R.S.P.
