The Bachelor of Applied Information Science (Information Systems Security) was developed in response to growing industry needs for profes- sionals with security expertise. "As the volume of business information transferred over the Internet grows, there is an increasing need for trained professionals who can oversee the protection of corporate data integrity and confidentiality," says program coordinator, Victor Ralevich. "This new program will address that need, by preparing graduates who are techni- cally skilled and competent in various facets of information systems security, including database and network security, resource protection and applied cryptography." Sheridan Graduate Named Winner of 2003 Premier's Award Graduates will also have in-depth theo- retical and practical expertise in major computer science fields, such as CPU architecture, operating systems design, programming, database design and administration, and network design and management. "This comprehensive program will prepare students for a wide variety of job opportunities, from network security administration to smart-card programming," says Ralevich. Sheridan's School of Applied Computing and Engineering Sciences is home to approximately 2,500 full- time students. The School offers a variety of degrees, diploma and gradu- ate certificate programs in the areas of applied computing and telecommuni- cations, engineering and manufacturing sciences, and industrial technology. Suzanne Marie Demars, a 2002 graduate of Sheridan's Community Worker - Outreach and Development program, has been named recipient of the 2003 Premier's Award in the Recent Graduate catego- ry. Ms. Demars will be presented with her award at the Premier's Awards event to be held in Kingston, Ontario on February 23, 2004. Suzanne's story is a remarkable one of perseverance, exceptional effort, and triumph over adversity. A single moth- er of three children, a survivor of domestic abuse, and a mother whose daughter was sexually abused, she has overcome personal hardship and built on her experiences to help others. She is the founder of Not My Child, a non-profit organization which offers support and counseling to families dealing with child sexual abuse. Among other volunteer activities, she also coordinates a Red Cross education program on the prevention of abuse Suzanne Marie Demars and harassment in the minor hockey league system. "Every abusive situa- tion prevented through my work is an unseen victory," says Suzanne. Although she is a winner in the Recent Graduate category, Suzanne is still a student at Sheridan. After graduating from the Community Worker program, she enrolled in the Social Service Worker program and is currently com- pleting her final year. "I felt as though I needed more strength in counseling skills to ensure that I am able to meet my clients' needs. When I graduate, I will have even more to offer the com- munity," says Suzanne. Among her many honours and awards, Suzanne is the recipient of the 2003 Flare Volunteer Award, the City of Brampton 2003 Long Term Service Award, the Sheridan College Student Union Leadership Award 2002, and the Brampton Youth Hockey Association 2000 - Denver Davies Memorial Award.
