--Inquest ordered in death of M.ap-ýlehurst p-risoner A coroner announced last week that an inquest will be held in the death of an inmate two years ago. ibis announcement was made Wednesday by Dr. Karen J. Acheson, regional supervising coroner for central west Ontario. The man, 39-year-old Paramnjeet Singh Padda, died wbile in the custody of Maplehurst Correctional Complex. Under the Coroners Act, an mnquest is mandatory wheo a person dies while in custody. The inquest will review the events surrounding Mr. Padda's deatb and may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. The mnquest is expected to last four weeks and wil hear from about 49 witnesses. The inquest will begin January 12 at 9:30 arn. at the Ramada Inn, 161 Chisholm Dr. Dr. Acheson will pr- side as the inquest coroner. Police blocked off streets Thursday morning after a natural gas lime was ruptured in a ditch in front of Systema Excellence on Industrial Drive. Barry Kory, training technician with the Milton Fire Departmnent, said the department received the cail at about 1 1 ar. A natural gas line had been ruptured by contractors fixing the ditches and giving thse street a 'makeover." Mr. Kory said. Union Gas anrived and stopped the leak. Police closed parts of Market and Industrial drives as fire crews went from business to business, checking gas levels. "lt wasn't a major catastrophe, but there was the potential for being a big one," Mr. Kory said.
