Il * w iii The Cana( Voting hours, poli sites Milto ma - B'y JASON MISNER The Champion Unsuccessful Ward 1 municipal election candidate Greg Nelson says voting hours should be extended to help avoid the kind of low turnout that plagued bis ward in last week's election. Mr. Nelson said hie isn't blamning Uhe Town, but that the hours on Uhe day of vat- ing - 10 arn. until 8 p.m. - wes-e insuf- ficient. He Uiosks Uhc polis should open at 8 arn. Sa people can vote before they head ta work, and could lead ta a higher turnaut Uic next tinte around. "I da agree that we have a twa-haur win- daw in Uhc marning," he said. "I'm sure they're (the Tawn) receiving tans af input fram the wards about haw ta da things bet- ter in 2006." Ward 1 's voter tumaout waa 22 per cent, compared ta ncxt highest in wards 3 and 4 at 33 per cent. Ward 2 has the fargest turnaut at 37 per cent. Tawn staff will bring back a report on election issues - like outlining advanced poi locations - when the next election rails around in 2006. Town clerk Troy McHarg said counicil wiil have the option at Usat tirne of extend- mng voting boums if it wants ta. Changes would require a majority vote. While die report is stiil a ways away, hie said it could include recommendations for longer voting houri. Council can choose ta have voting day start carlier than 10 a.m., but it can't extend the houri beyond 8 p.m., Mr. McHarg said uals, "it's possible in Uic future we can look at ways of acconimodatisg voters at the advanced poiling locations," hie said. "Wc can set Uhc houri for advanced poila," hie said. The advanced poils this year were held over two days at Milton Mall. The houri reflected when thc mail was open. Another reason given as ta why voter tumnout was so low in Ward 1 was the loca- tion of poiling stations. Lau Medeiros, an unsuccesaful candi- date in Ward 1, said the locations for the ward were iil-chasen. Eigible vateri an the ward's east side bad ta go Trafalgar Golf and Country Club and those on Use west side had ta, go ta the Milton Sports Centre. Mr. Medeiros said Use drive ta boUs loca- tions was sùmply too far, which hie feels contributed ta Use ward's disappointing voter turnout. "Two-irds of the voting public cames from die new subdivision. Why would Uiey place a voting poig station (at Use golf course) s0 far away?" Mr. McHarg said hc's responsible for cboosing the eight voting locations and drove around town ta find the most appra- priate spots. "We had ta accommodate ail Use electors in Ward 1 and balance competing interests (from oUser wards)." But Mr. McHarg noted Usose poiling locations could change in the 2006 elec- tion.
