One Monday after work, flot long ago, I was on a bus travelling home. The darkness of a heavy rainstorm covered the area. Everyone was wet from the rain and seemed to be in the Monday blues. No one spoke, or even smliled. They kept to themselves. Even the bus driver grumbled when spoken to. A little school girl with her over- sized school bag slung over her shoulders, mounted the stairs onto THE GIFT FROM A CHILD the bus; and reached up to drop her fair into the box. The only vacant seat was directly across from, the driver right at the door. She sat down and was quite still for a moment. Then we became aware that she had begun to, sing quietly to her- self. "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow. .. .bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow there'll be sun!" Oblivious to those around her, her song continued, and her voice grew stronger as she subcon- scibusly felt more committed to the words. Lt wasn't long before those nearby looked at her and then glanced at those close to her, and shared smiles. Soon, others began to notice - it all seemed to be conta- gious, as the music and the smiles passed through the bus. After a few blocks this young girl got off the bus, unaware of how she had touched all of us. The bus driver began whistling the tune... and as we left, he said, "Have a good day."
