6 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, September 30, 2003 SCOMMENT Lots to choose from While voters head to the polis for the provincial election this week, there's also lots to think about at the municipal level. As reported elsewhere in this newspaper, registration for candidacy wrapped up Friday and a total of 44 people are running to represent Milton as either mayor, town counicillor, regional counicillor, school trustee or regional chair in the November 10 municipal election. With the exception of the regional councillor seat for Wards 1 and 3, ini which incumbent Barry Lee has been acclaimed, there's something local voters will have lots of this time around - choice. More candidates than i recent memory have throwýn their hats ito the ring, especially ini the mayoral race with five people challenging Gord Krantz. Is the increased interest ini local politics due to the town's growth- a higher population means more candidates - or is it that people want change around the counicil table? Maybe it's a lîttle bit of both. Regardless of what's behind the surge in candidacy, the municipal election should be an interestmng one with lots of important issues on the table. Hopefully, we'll have a dlean election without mud slung ito the ring as well. OUR READERS WRITE THE CANADL4IV CHAMPION Milton, Ont. This year, however, il was a new experietice. I hadn't even made it toi ie hall at 10: 15 a.m. when a lady warned me Ibat I had belter hurry in and gel things submitted. This made me fel tike il was a race. I Ibought 1 had 45 minutes left, so why Ibe rush? I met a friend jual coming ouI of the hall who remarked, "BOY, the stress ils palpable i Ibere." By lthe time 1 got. int the hall I My friend, who has three chil- dren, was hassled more than me, with five different ladies coming up to provide a stress-filled warning. In previous years the hours 10 submil crafts had been 9 10 il a.m. on Thursday moming. This year the lime was shortened 10 9 10 10:30 a.m. But il seems 10 me that even if someone walked through the door at 10:30 a.m. with their crafts, they should stili be helped with respect - flot with wamings. 1 don't think the judging should sat until aI leasI 11:30 a.m. if the closing lime for submission is 10:30 a.m. This space of lime would place less stress on volun- teers and parents. As il was, I don't think anyone in the bail was enjoying themselves Thursday. Parents are big facilitators of what happent in the children's craft assistance. This is a community event that should be joyful ini ail aspects. There should be a team of child-Ioving and relaxed volunteers in tbis area and proper time should be devoted to facilitate this. The Milton Fail Fair has been a small-town event for 150 years. To this end, let's flot become 100 organized or too pushy in our atti- tude toward the people who con- tribute and make this fair whal it is by parlicipatmng. People in a amail town are used to being treated with respect and kind- ness, and I'm one Miltonian whu would like to sec tbis continue no marter how much this town grows. This is not menant to be taken as criticism of the volunteers who work vecy hard every year, but rather crificism of the way things were handled tbis year. Judy Ciffford Milton Pud by Steve Nease 49
