Swim for) - -«-, t..........*. .... i.I, ' ( lj'p By STEPHANIE THIESSEN The Champion T oSonja van de Hoef and Heather Fleming, theres no sweeter sound than that of children's voices blending together in harmony. Thanks 80 the efforts of these two women and other supporters, that will soon be heard more readily around Milton with the stant of the Adoramnua Chi ldren's Choir. "l'm really excited about seeing the church (Knox Preabyterian) and the com- mnunity corne together," said Ms van de Floef, the choit-s founder/director. The choir, for chtldren and youth aged 6 10 17, is flot a church choir, but a commu- nity children's choir. The fact that children aretit obligated to participate in or sing in services regularly at Knox church ta one of the thtngs that separates tt from a church choir, said Ms van de Hoef. Sacred music wtll comprise part of' the repertoire, but flot al ofit. Mary Light wtll be the choirs accon-pa- nist. Something else that differenttates the ensemble from a typical church choir ts what Ms van de Hoet calls "a high standard ol musicianship.- -When peuple think ot a choir associted with a church, they think ita flot on par with other choira. But we surive for high music ability. she said. Auditions will beL held September 8 from 580o8 p.m. at Knox church. 123 Matn St. E. This is 10 give Ms van de Hoef and Ms Fleming an idea of what level the kida are at and to give the chtldren and teens a chance 10 ask questions, Ms van de Hoef said. No musical experience is necessary 80 join, she stressed. The choir wilI be split into two age groupa. Kida aged six 80 eight will be under SERMON 0ONTHE MOUiT' LEW STERRETT In a self centered, relationally fragmented society, the horse has one of the most vital messages for hope! Sermon on the Mount uses horses to illustrate basic pnnciples of living and character building. Date. Wednesday, September 3, 2003 lime: 6 p.m. lecture, corn roast to follow Location: Mohawk Raceway (Guelph LUne north of 401) Cail St. Davids Presbyterian Church 905-854-9800 for more information FPREE ADMISSION the direction of Ms Fleming in the Angelets Choir, while those aged 9 to 17 will be led by Ms van de Hoef in the Gloriana Choir. The youngcr choir will practice Mondays from 6 to 6:45 p.m., while the other will mun Mondays from 6 t0 8 p.m. Both will meet at Knox church. For parents who have more than one child in the choir, it may be a welcome relief that theres just one drop-off day. And when the younger child is picked up, both parent and child are welcome 80 watch the Gloriana choir finish their rehearsal. Ms van de Hoef aaid. Something else that makea the choir unique is the integration of movement, signing and percussion. Ms van de I-oef said flot only do kids love it. it also helpa them learn quieker. The percussion helpa the ktds leam the songas rhythm, and the signing helpa them mnemorize the words. One of the purposes of the new choir is tu gise children a chance to receise qualtty vocal instruction no matter what thetr household income. Ms van de Hoef said the Adoramus choir wtll flot only give participants an opportu- nîîy 10 aing, but also to leam some theory like reading music, and even receive one- on-one vocal training from Ms Fleming. The coat of the choir is $70 per term for each child. Families with more than two children in the choir are offered a special rate. "This is a unique choir, in that Knox Preabyterian Church supporta it. which will help t0 keep the membership fées down,- said Ma van de Hoef, adding excitedly that it also means there dont need to be fundraisera. "l'm really excited 80 see Knox reach out 80 the community in this way. Il cuts the cost (of the choir) in half," The choira will perform two concerts for the community - one during the Christmas season and one next apring. Ms Fleming aaid she enjoys waîching kida "corne out of their shelas and blossom'" in youth choira. "They think they can't sing, then they improve and have more confidence."
