At its July 28 meeting. councillors passed a recommendation to forge ahead with a feasibility study of establishing wlhat's called a heritage subdivision in town. The idea is to find a common place for buildings under threat of demolition to be moved to. People would live in the home and pay propery taxes. The concept lias proven successful in Markham, which set up one more than a decade ago. Viewing Markham's subdivi- sion will form part of the feasibility study. Town planner Anne Bouck said the study will take about six months to complete. "The main purpose would be to have lots available to receive heritage resources ai risk," she said. "Having a site goes a long way to protecting heritage resources." Heritage Milton - which is made up of private citizens, elected representatives and municipal staff - first endorsed the con- cept of a feasibility study for a heritage subdivision ai its June 5 meeting and for- warded the request to Town staff. In a report sent to council, Heritage Milton stated there are about 40 homes of historical significance in the Bristol and Sherwood survey areas that could become victims of demolition. Ward 3 Councillor Ken Keates, a mem- ber of Heritage Milton, said he wants to see historical buildings saved to help enrich the Town's culture. He said there's a possibility to create a halt dozen or so subdivisions around town, not just one site. "Initially I would prefer a single location. but I think multiple locations might be a good idea and that more people would get to sec them, he said. The Town of Markham started its 38-lot heritage subdivision in 1989. It's two- thirds full. The incentive is to provide an affordable lot price to the potential homeowner given the expense to upgrade and move a bouse to the subdivision. People are required to restore the home Io its historical significance. which could include things like ensuring windows, sid- ings and landscaping features reflect the time the house was buil.
