6 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, July 29, 2003 +COMMENT Seeing justice in bike à thefts next on agenda Wth numerous disturbing events taking place ail around us lately, it's nace to, have a good-news story on the front page today. T'he story followed the outpouning ot kindness and generosîty of numerous business owners and citizens who didn't hesitate to corne to the aid of the Riders Ready program afier its 19 BMX bikes were stolen. Not only did people quickly jump on board to replace the stolen bikes, they donated enough bikes and cash to largely expand the non- profit program. We're thrilled with the response from the community, but, quite hon- estly, flot surprised. We've seen the kindness and generosity of the town's business people and citizens on a regular basis. K Y tells these special needs children that the community cares. After someone cruelly took away the kids' precious bikes, the large number of donations restores the children's faith in people - the good - in people. Q Now, finding those responsîble for the theft and seeing justice served will make the good-news story complete. O UR R FADER S WRITE Reaer is used y BX ikethetsIntersection not planned weII., man agrees Dear Editor: 1 live in Courtice, Ont., but my bus- band and 1 were bomn and raised in the greatest small town in the world- Milton. Our familles own businesses there, including (Jenuine Gold Connection and Durantes Auto Service and Towing. 1 couldnt believe it when 1 read in last Friday's Champion about te 19 special needs bikes that were stolen in town last week. I've always been proud of Milton and tie people wbo live there. Tlhose who stole the bikes should be asbamed to cal themselves Miltonians, if in fact they are. If they know what's good for them theyll retum those bikes as soon as possible. As punisbment they should be forced to work with social needs children. Then maybe they would reaize what affect such a thing can have on someoe. In the end il would be a valuable lesson for them. Our family business would be happy to donate a bike to replace one of those stolen. Michelle Durante Mangotlch Coultloe, ont. Dear Editor: 1 thoroughly agree with J. Swainson's complaint about the design and development of the Thompson Road and Steeles Avenue intersection. It would be helpful if our councillors took more leadership on the issue. Compare the design of the Main and Martin streets intersection to every other one in town. At Main and Martin streets, we have a walkable streetscape with two and three-storey buildings built righî up to the sidewalk and parking in the rear. Thlat invites you to, stay and spend xome ime bhu rnvidine an auent., ment of commercial opportunities and interesting architecture. Flsewhere we have pavement and non-descripi one-sîorey commer- cial strips that encourage quick in and out traffic and the resultant pol- lution and congestion. Pedestrians dont stand a chance. Imagine if we designed aIl our intersections like our downtown. We would have many places in Milton that people could actually walk to, shop, have an ice cream on a summers day and talk with our neîghbours. These ideas arent new. They're actually being implemented in Ontario. AIl it takes is zoning that allows for two, three and four- storey buildings along our main streets and design controls that require rear-placed parking. Heck, we might even get some affordable rentaI housing above the stores. Mayor Gord Krantz says that he bas a vision for Milton and that's why he has decided to run again. 1 hope his vision and that of ail the other candidates in the commng elec- tion includes reclaiming our streets and intersections from endless asphalt and miserable design.
