"l-istorically couniti has flot been in agreemnent to take additionat waste into our site." said Regionat Chair Joyce Savotine, one of a number of Hatton counicittors steadfast against becoming a dumping ground for Toronto's trash. "t think it woutd be a council decision, but pcrsonaily i don't want to see it happen because of the divisiveness. (The iandfilt) is sized and engineered for Halton's particular needs." The landfill site, iocated on Regionai Road 25 in Milton, has capacity for three million tonnes. Toronto is seeking an emergency garbage disposai site in Ontario to handie backiogs caused by probiemns crossmng the border to dump the citys waste in Michigan. The closure of the border May 24 for 18 bours due to the mad cow disease scare painfully higlilighted Toronto's fragility wben it cornes to gecting nid of its one million tonnes of annuat waste by crossing the border into the U.S. Recause of the sensitive border issue, the City has trucked about 200 semi-trailer loads to Gueiph's iandfill since May. Gueiph is cbarging about the same $53 a tonnc as the Michigats iandfill. I die fait, Toronto will send out requests for proposais (RFPs), wbich esseniatly is a bidding procesa to provide a particutar service, and in this case to provide a temporary location to baul garbage. Toronto council votecl in favour of tise RFP process lat week. Regional councillors who ait on Halton's planning and public works committee, whicb deats with waste issues, cited Haiton's tandfill expectancy and size and tbe sometimes dif- ficuit work that was undertaken to choose a site bere in tie tate 1980s as main reasons against acceptin.g Toronto's trasb. Rick Bonnette, Haiton Hifis regionai councillor and com- mittce chair, said the Region bas worked diligencty to reduce the amount waste tbat's already going into the site by increas- ing the amount of recyctabie materiai and composting. Milton Mayor and Regionai Councillor Gord Krantz - flot a member of the ptanning and public works cormmitee- was succinct in bis position. "My reaction woutd be flot interested, flot interested in a proposai whatsoever." Jason Misner can be reached atjmisnerC&miltoncanadian- champion.com.
