The M%/any trucks ordered off road in blitz BY TIM WHITNELL nulti-pohice task force during a recent safety blitz were ordered off the road for mechanical or driver violations. Investigators with Halton Regional Police, OPP and the Ministry of Transportation took 54 of 85 rigs out of service in the two-day selective crack- down in the Milton area last week. Halton police report that on July 2, 25 of the -36 commercial vehicles checked at the mobile inspec- tion station at Mohawk Raceway, at Guelph Line and Hwy. 401, were taken out of service. Twenty-two of the trucks targetcd for inspection were grounded for equipment or load violations while the other three were for driver violations. Si sets of licence platcd were also rcmoved. A total of 29 I-ighway Traffie Act charges were laid. Const. AI Stcnnett of Halton polices regional traffie bureau was part of the inspection tcam. He said trucks wcre pulled over based on appearance and that almost ail of those checked had Ontario plates. "The numbers are high and that's not too, good. We'll have to get out there more. The predominant problem is with brakes and tires is another one," said Consi. Stennent. He noted a four-day safety blitz along Dundas Street in May resulted in a similar high percentage of trucks being puîled off the road with 12 of 17 inspected by him being taken out of service. Const. Stennett indicated there were a couple of cases during the recent Milton inspections that stood out as accidents waiting tit hartpený lia ~ ciu iolm lysuturined rîphi, no problem. In another instance he said a dual axle Iandscap- ing truck had no brake fluid, had wom brake lines and three of tour tires were in such bad shape he deemed them "toast." Const. Stennent also said some trucks in Milton had to he towed away because the mechanical prohlems were so extensive. Others were able to be fixed on site and driven away. In a few instances drivers were grounded. They had either excceded their road time- one had been driving non-stop for 19 hours - not proper- Iy compîeted their pre-tnip inspections or their per- sonal licencing/registration was invalid. Replacement drivers had to be called in to pick up the company vehicle.
