Ilocal residents on sex offender registry By JASON MISNER The Champion There are 66 people on the province's sex offender registry living in Halton- eight in Milton -but police stress there's no need to panic. None are considered dangerous and al are complying with local iaw enforcement. "The public shouid be pleased we know their whereabouts,- said Halton Regional Police Deputy Chief Gary Croweli in an nten,.'ew. Deputy Chief Crosseil and Acting Dci. Sgt. Dave Broughton- head of the foren- sic identification section for Halton police -made a presentation to regionai council Wednesday to update councillors on Halion's component of the province's sex otiender registry. The only one of ils kind in Canada. the two-year-old Ontario registry tracks the addresse s of' individuals who have been convicted of s arous sexuai crimes. from sexual assauli to incest. I-aiton police feut that given the media attention surrounding the tragic murder of Toronto girl Hoily Jones in May and the focus on the number of sex offenders living in ber west end neîghbourhood, it was the right time to bring everyone up to speed on the registry and how it works. "It's certainiy got a lot of attention and there's been a lot of misinformation," Deputy Chief Croweii toid council. Police stressed the number of sex offend- ers was presented to counicillors to show the public the realities of the registry that the 66 offenders, al maie, are effec- tiveiy tracked, that each is foiiowing the conditions set out as part of being on the registry and that none are considered dàn- gerous. If an offender is ciassified as dangerous, Deputy Chief Croweli said police notify Halton Region and the municipality about the neighbourhood that the person is mov- ing into. Mr. Broughton said offenders must noti- fy police within 15 days if they're moving. Also, he said police submit high-quality photographs of offenders to the registry to ensure better recognitin. "We*ve received good compliance from ail the people on the regisu-y. That's an important part." A great feature of the registry is it allows police to do a radius search, in which offi- cers can plop in an address to find out how many offenders are living within a few kilomet-es of that address. Mr. Broughton made it clear 10 counicil that the regîstry isn't simply made up of pedophiles but -iifs a registry for ail sex oftenders.- Oflenders are on the registry for either 10 years or a lifetime depending on the type and number of crimes commitned.
