Halson Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bob Notai said there't a chance the report mnight be delayed due to the immense amnount of staff timne the health departsmens bas spens addresting SARS. The report is ttill being drafted. "The health departmnent's position on whether welI-water should be fiuoridased wifl be pars of the report," Dr. Notai said. Halson Region is responsible for water services. Town council approval isn't required for the Region to move forward with the project, shough the Region would consuit with the Town before any action is taken. A report released by the health department last October showed a link between a higher preva- lence of tooth decay amnong kids in Milton - on average the highest in Halton - and non-fluori- dated water. Somne 33,000 Milton residenta are on well-based systems that aren's fiuoridated. Milton's new sub- divisions receive fluoridated water from a lake- based water supply through a pipeline running from Oakville. According to a survey contained ini the report of 1,522 children (ages five, seven and nine), 53 per cent of Milton children have dental decay, six per cent of which require urgent care. That compares to a 49 per cent decay rate in Burlington, a 48 per cent in Halton Hilis and a 42 per cent in Oakville. The report stated: "Water fluoridation is consid- ered the single mots effective, efficient, safe and equitable methnd in preventing dental caries." It alto noted AtIanta's Centres for Disease Control - considered the world's leading aushor- ity on infectious ditease and public heaith infor- mation - caled water fluoridation one of the top 10 healsh accomplishments of the 20th censsuy. In the mid-70t there was a referendumn that asked residents if they wanted their water fluori- dated and the majority taid no. Mayor Gord Krantz taid he was against it then, as welI, but said he's Iooking forward to seeing what the Region's staff report tayt about well water fluoridation.
