L 8--The Canadien Champion, Friday, Match 7, 2003 HIGH SCHOOL ORT 'TEE ROYAL REPORT' Jenna Masciantonio Meredith Murphy BISNOP REDINO 10 SCHeOL Relief cannot describe the feeling March Break instills in each hardworking, goal oriented student here at BR. There are no words that can possibly express why our grins are so large, our laughter so loud, and our stomachs so full. The four-day week seemed far longer than it should have been, plagued with excitement and anticipation for the break. Although it may have seemed lengthy it certainly wasn't bor- ing. Tuesday was filled with the sights and sounds that accom- pany every pancake lunch. The smell of sweet maple sugar and the sticky floor; where one too many plates fell to their death cementing the once perfectly good pancakes to the cafeteria floor. Like many of BR's traditions it is difficult to pinpoint the exact descent of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Surveying numerous students on the meaning of the word "Shrove" we thought it important to further educate you in this matter. The word "shrove" is the past tense of "shrive", which helps quite a bit. "Shrive" is a transitive verb from the Middle English "shriven", in turn from the Anglo-Saxon "scrifan", which owes its roots to the Latin "scribere", "to prescribe penance". It is similar to the German "schrieben" meaning, "to write". Sharing the same base the English language has "scribe", "Script". The archaic meaning is to hear confession of, and usually after penance, give absolution too. We hope you have understood and appreciate this obvious- ly valuable information. Much like school it will benefit your character for years to come. Birdies were flying high this week as the Badminton team worked off their pancakes. They are gearing for the upcoming toumament set to take place after the break. The competition is being watched, so a word of warning: don't blink cause a BR "smash" is coming your way! Basketball seems to be the never-ending sport in the Royal's gym, and with good reason. The boys are working hard in the off-season with drills and skills. So keep your eyes peeled for the vengeful return next year. March Break is an excellent opportunity for you and your supporting cast members to shoot the next scene for the upcoming Film Festival. All "artists" must submit their work by May 20th for the screening June 2nd. Break a leg! FACT OF THE WEEK: "Greasy Tuesday" from the French Mardi Gras, the origins of giving up food from ani- mais during Lent, it was a time to use up leftover animal products such as lard. front %evli4, $Pa Ont A promotional package is currently being sold on behalf of our salon. The early March weather has certainly been ferocious, and we can only keep our fingers crossed that it will soon turn soft. The approaching warm weather is greatly anticipated, in hopes that the student parking will- be relieved of its chaos, seeing as no orie is willing to park far from the school because of the recent bitterly cold temperatures! However, the parking lot hasn't been as heavily popu- lated this past week, as many of our top athletes have been away competing at OFSAA competitions. All in all, four teams from E.C.D. are contending in OFSAA trials. Here is an update from last week: the senior girls' volley- ball tean did in fact qualify for these high provincial stan- dards. We would also like to take this opportunity to apol- ogize to the girls' hockey team, whom we accidentally omitted from our Drury OFSAA qualifiers list last week. Hopefully, this week some Drury students managed to check the lists in the Locker Bay of "bad apples" who had not handed-in their course selection sheets on time. Most of E.C.'s "good" students have already chosen the class- es that they wish to take next year, or, as Mr. Murray says, checked the "magical box" indicating that they will not be returning to Drury. EVER. AIl of our students will not be returning to school until St. Patrick's Day, March 17th. Today is a P.D. day, and marks the sound off of Drury breakin' in to MARCH BREAK. On your marks, get set, have fun! But, for those of you who are doomed to work all week long: tough luck, and better luck next March Break! For those of you going on vacation: enjoy your week in the sun (read: we hate you!) In contrast, it will be easy for you to find someone who will love you when you pick up your results from the t- Flirtz matchmaker questionnaires! And it will only cost you a toonie. These hot commodities will be available in the L-Bay during the week after March Break. Also that week: look out, march madness is roaring our way, with games and festivities for all. In closing: Drury Sailors, it's all smooth sailing from here on out. We all have ten days of sleeping-in, school- free, teacher-free, calm waters! It's up to you to cause some waves! Mogan Caven Steph Creighton MILTON DISTRICT BIe SCUGOL "MUSTANG MESSENGER" March Break! Yes Mustangs, it is finally here. The moment you have all been waiting for. Well, actually the week, for that matter. It is now the division time between winter and spring. Trips to warmer destinations are taking place, and school will be at a standstill until we return on Monday, March 17th. Congratulations to the boy's basketball teain, who put in a wonderful season. Despite losing to Notre Dame, they were chosen as the Double "A" Halton representatives. The fought hard against the Peel/Dufferin reps, but they unfor- tunately lost again. Under the coaching of Mr. Oliver, they have worked impressively hard. "Hoops for Heart" was on February 28th, period 2, 3 and 4. Organized by Craig Harding and Jen Mikolyte, there were 21 teams who played three on three basketball. They were watched and cheered on by 83 spectators, who paid an admission of $4.00 each. This event raised a total of $1900 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Thanks to all of those who participated. Yesterday was "The Black Tie Affair." Our semi-formal was tons of fun, and was organized by the Prefects. Blair Davey, Taylor Coulombe, Lynn Stokes, and Katherine Russell, as the head committee, put in a huge amount of time and effort. All the ladies who were there were dressed impeccably. Flowers were the centerpieces of each table, and lights were stung along the gym, which did not look at all like the usual sweat center that it is. The E.C. Drury food school created a delicious, meal, which lived up to their rep- utation. All in all it was a great time for all those involved. Yesterday, Thursday, March 6th, was also the beginning of the boy's soccer tournament, and we wish them the best of luck. Coming up at MDHS... well, we guess that you'll find our after March Break. Come back on the 21st and we'll fill you in on the latest scoop. Until then, enjoy the time off, and don't forget to come back on the 17th for another "manic Monday." 905-876-3761 REP 84 Main St. E., Milton
