Report author says some cancers caused by poor lifestyle choices e from CANCER on page 2 men are prostate (25.6 per cent), fol- lowed by Iung (14.6 per cent) and col- orectal (12.8 per cent). In women, the leading cancers are breast (31.7 per cent), followed by colorectal (1 1.4 per cent) and lung (10.4 per cent). The Region used data from Cancer Care Ontario in ils report. Mr. Delmore stressed some cancers are caused by poor lifestyle choices. For example, he said the, chances of getting lung or pancreatic cancer could be reduced by elunlinating smoking. This is important t0 point out, Wr Delmore said, because of the results of a survey conducted by York University. Commissioned on behaif of Ontario's 21 public health departments, includmng Halton Region, dhe universi- ty surveyed more than 2,000 people 18 years of age and older between January 2001 and August 2002 to gauge what they thouglit were the causes of various cancers. Information was collected for each individual public health depart- ment. Most respondents said tobacco was the number one cause of cancer, fol- lowed by fiamily history and environ- mental pollution. Mr Delmore said extensive research shows tobaceo is the leading cause of cancer. And while it waa encouraging most respondents agreed it waa the biggest cause, the diseouraging part is they represented less than haif of those surveyed. Also, research shows diet and obesi- ty are actually second among cancer causes. Family history and pollution are further down die list.
