But who could blame them? FAI IES . The police, public and Wal-Mart staff went into overdrive when they thought the predator had stnick again.i Fortunately, this time, the youngster hadn't been touched inappropri- ately, and for that, we're thankful. We sbouldn't panic, but the recent attacks in Oakville were a littie too close to our community for comfort. As a precaution, when you go shopping with your children, remem- ber to keep a close watch on them at ahl times. We know it can be dif- ficult to keep the litile ones in check, but they can become the vicfim of a predator in a matter of seconds. If you notice anyone acting suspiciously toward children, report it to the authorities irnmediately. And, if the man responsible for these attacks happens to be reading this, for your own sake and for the sake of others, tum yourself in. Dear Editor: l'm writing in response 10 tbe lot- ter titled 'Reader says Milton's town planners need to do a better job managinsg town's future', wbicb appearcd in The Champion Friday, Jan. 10. While I applaud Tom Wollschlaeger's concem for the welfare of our commnunity and sup- port some of bis suggestions, 1 must take issue witb his point about stop- pmng high-density housing. t agrec that it probably is more pleanant for familios 10 live in homes on the size lots tbat you sec in the older parts of town. Unfortssnately, given present con- ditions, large lots in new develop- monts arc a luxury Ibat noithor many of the buyors nor the rest of the citizens of Milton can afford. Using amaîl lots keeps prices down and makes home ownorship more available for familios. Asido from that, it bas the following ben- efits for our comumunity: * It prevents urban sprawl and preserves green space. 'Me more people wbo can live on a given area of land, tbe less need there is to use Up Our farnland and othor open spaces. - Higbor donsity bousing makos public transit more affordable, cre- ating more potential ridera for a bus route in a given area In tumn, incroased use of public transit reduces air pollution and prevonîs traffic gridlock. * More housmng donsity makos il casier and choapor 10 supply csson- tiaI services like water, waste man- agement and roads, l'vo been following the planning ~-n~aI yo, Iotrs Q th$dI*, ant ifr haltonserch.com. Pud by Steve Nease tb the wesî and south of town - the Sberwood Survey. During Abat pmocess, I've been impressed with the expertise and careful thought that as gone intc the proposed plans. My concemn is about wbether or not truly beavy density residential properties, like apartmont build- ings, will ho built. Thoy'ro really needed bore to provide safe, affordablo housmng for seniors, young people at thc begin- ning of their work life and thoso wbo can't yet afford 10 own their own homes. There continues to ho a sovore shortago of affordablo rentaI accommodation in Milton. High density isn't a problem, it's a solu- tion. Wendy Schau WANT 1
