Town may provide grants for restoration projects By RICHARD VIVIAN The Champion Property owners in downtown Milton and other heritage sites may get a helping hand from the Town should they undertake restoration projects. Milton counicil endorsed a motion last week that would sec Town staff include the considera- tion of financial incentives for her- itage property owners as part of the officiai plan five-year review - set to begin next year. "I think this is encouraging. In terms of commercial development, Our strategy is to create a strong downtown core. If that's your strat- egy, you have to be prepared to invest in several ways," said Councillor John Challinor, who also chairs H-eritage Milton (for- merly known as the Local Architectural Conservation "lIt (restoration projects) helps to mrate a vibrant downtown core." Advisory Committee). It (restora- tion projecta) helps to create a vibrant downtown core. It attracts better merchants. It attracts con- sumners." Provincial legialation shlows municipalities to offer tinancial assistance to property owners look- ing to undertake restoration proj- ects provided the Town has an approved 'Community Involvement Plan'. Milton currently has no such plan. As part of the tive-year offi- ciaI plan review, Town staff will consider the creation of such a plan, what would be included in the plan, as well as a range of fmnancial incentives available to the Town. "These reviews (officiaI plan, parking policy and standards study), may establish a policy basis and lay the groundwork for down- town revitalization," states a Town staff report on the issue. "In addition, given the recent streetscape improvements com- pleted on Main Street, it would also be beneficial for staff to continue to monitor development progress and property improvements in the Central Business District, as indi- cators such as storefront vacancies and building conditions are integral to determining downtown revital- ization priorities." -EMS info session set for Jan. 9 With a new ambulance station coming to Milton, Halton Region Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will host a public information session to discuss the facility. TMe session will be held January 9 (from 7 to 9 p.m.) in the Community Room of the Halton Regional Police station on Childs Drive. The new facility is to be built on the Allendate property on Ontario Street. "Locating the new EMS station in Milton on the property of the Allendale facility provides good ambu- lance response time for Milton and the surrounding area and is designed to support the Region's commit- ment to providing high quality emergency medical services," said Jim King, director of Halton EMS. For more information about the session, contact Halton Region Emergency Medical Services at (905) 825-6007 or on-line at www.region.halton.on.ca/health.
