E. 905-878-4280 Diversity committee to be voice for people of different cultures By RICHARD VIVIAN The Champion There needs 10 be more diversity on the Haiton Diversity Advisory Committee (HDAC), several members said during their inaugural meeting last week. - The HIDAC is a provincial ly-mandated initiative 10 encourage munîcîpaîtties 10 work with communiîy partners 10 identify and eliminate barriers Io services. The group will look ai more than racial issues. delving mbtc ageism. sexism and dsability-related concems. "In a communiîy thats growing as [ast as Halton is, it's better for us 10 be aware, earlier than later. of the diversity that is very mucli the fabric of Canadian life." said Regional Chair Joyce Savoline. who sits on the committee. "By being aware, 1 think we have a bet- ter understanding of how 10, communicate and how t0 address issues that persain 10 diversity. 'm very happy we have our first meeting underway." While approving ils terms of reference, the committee stopped short of identifying an action plan 10 deal with issues in Haton. A work plan will be discussed ai future * meetings. The biggest issue identified during the initiai meeting was the make-up of the committee iself. Wihile boîli sexes and a variety of ages are represented, the vast majority of committee members are white. "I have higli expectations (of the-com- mittee), but I would like 10 see more repre- sentation of the diverse community - not tokenism, but people who are gomng 1o work," said Elizabeth Carmîchael, repre- senting the North f-laton Cultural Awareness Counicil. -Halton is changing and wve hase to learn from svhat happened in Toronto and what happened in Peel and is going to happen in Halton. We have Io send out the message that Halton is inclusive and eservone is welcome and everyone is respccted." Those concerns were echocd by several other commitice members. ssho said they want 10 make sure the HDAC is the soîce of the mulîl-culturat people ol Halton. -Theres an obvious lack of' diversity arouind this table. That just contributes Io the problem.- said Const. Diane Hendry. diversity officer with Halton Regional Police. -We need t0 do more than listen, we need 10 include.- Ms Savoline defended the make-up of the committee. saying greater diversity will be achieved when the sub-committees are formed during future meetings. Ln addition t0 representatives from a number of communiîy organizations and other Regional committees. the HDAC also includes four citizens aI large. 'We feel we've guI the four best candi- dates (for citizen representatives)," she told The Champion. "There were other great applicants who want 10, corne onboard." The HDAC wil mccl every allier month 10 discuss progress 10 date and make rec- ommendations to the Halson healîli and social services committee, which will then consider the issues and forward a recom- mendation 10 regional council.
