6-The Canadian Champion, Tuesday December 10, 2002 SCOMMENT We're stili waiting It bas been more than a week since Roy Romanow issued bis 47- point prescription for wbat ails Canada's bealth-care system. We were boping that over the past week we would get an indication that Canadians got tbeir money's worth for Romanow's $15-million effort. We're stili waiting. Wbile Romanow's report contains some good recommendations that recognize the need for additional inedicare programs. his primary mes- sage- that the federal govemrment needs to increase ils health-care spending and stop sbortcbanging the provinces- is a no-bramner. Romanow would like to see Ottawa fund 25 per cent of the system and inject $15 billion of additional money into health cate by 2006. If followed to the letter, his report would see the feds spend $50-billlion more than currently forecast between 2006- 10. Wbile Prime Minister Jean Chretien has promised the feds will ý1move quickly" on Romanow's recomrmendations, doni't believe it for a minute. Ottawa and the provinces haven't eveni been able to agree on bow much tbe federal govemment funds the system. Romanow esti- mates it's 18.7 per cent, the provinces think it's 14 per cent and Ottawa says it's 40 per cent. The decades-long battie over cash will likely continue while the lines in doctor waiting rooms, clinics and hospitals only get longer. ANY NOPE. JuSr ANOTHER NSTORTURE CHAMBERoiC O UR READERS WRITE Reader says traffic pollution at J.M. Denyes Halton -s BîosolId Storage FacîIîty flot in best is a big problem and is hurting its students înterest of communîty or envîronment: reader Dear Editor: 1 read with interest about the asthma study being carried out at J.M. Denyes School. t frequently walk past this school when many of the students are being dropped off by parents and school buses, and the exhaust from idling vehicles is enough to make i diffteult to breathe. The problem isn't unique to Iis school as more and more children everywhere are bused in or are driven to school. Having an idle-free zone around the school woutd eliminate at least one unr- tant for those children with asthma and make it healthier for everyone and the envirotttxent. 1 urge those wit.h responsibility for chidren's health to take measures to cor- rect this problem. I understand the Region ai to diversify tbcir aiready in trouble. btosoiid wastc program. klowever, I believe such a tacility isn't in the best tnterest of' the residents and envirotiment of Halton. The BMC is located on tbe west bank of the Sixteen Mile Creck and the Trafalgar Moraine, visibly seen to the north-west trom the Hwy. 407 bridge as you cross Sixteen The existtng tacility isn't appro- priate land use in such an environ- mentalily-sensitive area.
