The participating scbools will have an educational programn called the *Roaring Adventures of' Puff', wbich is based on the Canadian Astbmu Consensus Guidelines and developed by the Alberta Astbma Centre. The sessions are interactive and teacb cbildren about their dis- euse, ustbma triggers and bow to avoid tbem, bow to use their medications correctly and bow astbma affects quality of fle. 'MTe six-week programn will be delivered to the children by a public bealth nurse and a certifted asthma educator over the lunch bour. Astbmu is the leuding cause of sehool absenteeism and hospîtal- ization in children. In many cases, the control of a child's astbma can reduce the impact of the disease on quality of fle und health cure costs. This project is one of the first to be implemented from the Asthina Plan of Action. The goal of this project is to corne up with strategies known to decreuse sehool ubsenteeism caused by astb- mu. decreuse healtb service use, improve the child's quality of life and reduce costs to the beulth cure system related to usthma otan- agement. The progrum is aimed ut children with usthma in grades 2 to 5, their famnilies and the educutors witbin the scbools that are select- ed. The study will be lead by the University of Toronto.
