Hectic three-game stretch productive for local tykes Milton's tykes began and ended a three-games-în- three-days stretch in victory - with wins over two tra- ditionally tough rivaIs during the past week. The Arthur Electric/Fifth Wheel Winterhawks capped off this hectie non by downing top-ranked Caledon 5-2 Tuesday. Bryce Abraham scored two unassisted goals to highlight a commanding first peri- od, and then completed a huge four-goal performance with back-to-back deposits in the third. Netminder Tristan Kivac shared the spotlight with a shutout through his haîf of the night, while also light- ing the lamp for the victors was Gareth Browne. Two days earlier, the local rink rats amassed three shorthanded goals en route to ou:distancing Georgetown 6-4. Abraham led with a hat-trick - scoring two of those while his team was killing penalties- while tallying twice was Browne. Milton's other shorthanded mark- er came from Drew McMillen. The Winterhawks' lone defeat over this busy stretch was a 3-I stback to Burlington Monday. Jason DaSilva made many key saves to keep his teano within striking distance. McMillen gave a stand- out performance on defence. while the lone goal was sunk by Ryan Stark. Four-game split Milton's AA minor bantams held their own last week in a four-game stretch that featured stiff competition at every tum. The Milton Machine Shop Winterhawks got things rolling by knocking off previously top-seated Burlington 7-3. An inspired cwo-way effort afforded the local lads this huge win - with Nick Nevins back- stopping the club to victory. Luke Hartwick led offen- sively with a goal and three helpers, while delivering a hat-trick was Daniel Kearos. From there, thse Winterhawks journeyed to the Fort Erie Toumament, where they won juso one of three games but kept things tight throughout the weekend. A 6-5 nail-biter over Tecumseh highlighted their Rep Hockey efforts. Milton overcamne a pair of two-goal deficits to prevail. Narrow losses came to top league rival Brampton and highly-touted Rochester. Feast or famine It was feast or famine last weekend for Milton's AA minor atonos, who found themselves on opposite ends of the production spectrum during back-to-back games. They kicked things off in explosive fashion - dis- mantling Guelph 9-2 Saturday. Sean McGovem had two goals and two assists, while also standing out with a goal and three helpers cach were Bryden Curran and Jamues Hart. Chipping in singles for the Dunsford Landscaping Winterhawks were Nicholas Cragg, Marcus Dunsford, Luke Kimmerer and Kevin Thomson. Against much-improved Orangeville Sunday. Milton short-circuited offensively and lost 4-1. Hart broke the shutout six minutes into the third. Perfect regular season followed by rather quick playoff exit By STEVE LeBLANC The Champion It's been said time and time again that the playoffs are a whole new season. E.C. Drury's junior girls basketball team camne face-to-face with that harsh reality on home court Tuesday. The Spartans had put the fmnishing touch- es on a perfect regular season just one week earlier and were no doubt expecting to keep their unheaten streak going in the quarterfmnals. But Oakville's Holy Trinity Titans had other ideas - and managed to squeak by their favoured hosts 36-32. Pressure too much? A 10-O regular season certainly put a lot of playoff pressure on thse junior cagers, and this as much as anything cisc may have contributed to their demnise. Holy Trinity 's stall tactics factored into the quarterfinal upset, but the hosts' sub- par shooting was just as big of a stumbling block - perhaps even more so. Gettmng outdone on thse paint didn't help matters cither. -They out-boarded us," stressed dejected head coacho Kevin Houldcroft, whose jun- ior girls enoyed a firs-round bye before being eliminatcd Tuesday. I thought tise game might be swinging our way when their point guard fouled out and we werc down by just two at the haîf with tise bonus. But we missed some easy shots and they got a lot of boards." Laura Wellstead drained ihree straight fouI shots and added a quick follow-up basket to ignite both teammates and fans laie in tise third quarter. Scoring lapse costly However, this jusi wasn't enough to overcome a big second-quarter scoring, lapse - not unlike during the team's regu- lar-season clash with Holy Trinity two weeks earlier - and an overall lack of accuracy. Katiserine Greaves - EC's most dependable scorer heading into tise play- offs - had serious trouble firing from the perimeter beyond the opening framne, wisile hier teamnmates coughed up tise ball a little ton mucis in the second haîf. The Titans enjoyed a fairly balanced attack and kept the gamne at a snail's pace for mnuch of the aftemoon. They led for al but a few seconds past tise first quarter en route to advancing to the final four. For tise Spartans, Welstead topped tise scoresiseet with Il points while Greaves collected nine. Sara Frcdnicks was about tise closeat îhing the hosts had to an effective rebound- er and sank two baskets - ncluding one night ai thc final buzzer. Lauren Gunding and Ashley Ruiz had four points each as well. The Canadîron Champion, Friday, November 15, 2002-27 ,Konkie lights up Man'ian Jarreti Konkle is nothing if not versa- t0c. The Milton teenager helped make headlines on the bail diamond this prat summer as a member of thse provincial champion Junior Red Sox. And he's been nio Iess impressive on thse ice this faUl with the NCAA's Elmîra College. Thse Division 3 sophomore for- ward - who toiled wîth fellow Miltonian and current Merchants cap- tain Craig Macdonald last season - has been averaging two points a gamne with the Soaring Eagles. But last Friday, Konke's early-season pace seemed almost conservative when he exploded for five goals aond a pair of assists to highlight Mamian Coilege. The NMilton oniper S scored in almost every conceivable fashion last Friday. He began with a first-period wraparostnd Janmft and duning a particularly KocMB kl sPeOts ITBddifram slruk on a deke, goal- moutis scrannble aond croas-ice redirect respectively. He then capped things off in thse tird by racing down the'right sie and one- timing a blast cleanly by Marian cager Terry Dunbar.
