Master Kim- a seventb degree black beît- recently moved 10 Milton witb is family from Toronto, purchasing Master Baik's Tae Kwon Do Academy on Main Street in May. "lt's more than martial arts, self-defence. lt's also buman pbilosopby. You bave to discover your internaI power, your breatb- ing," he said. "Many people do it for their health, but 1 tink il belps build personality, character." Master Baik is no longer with the acade- my and the name will ikely soon change, added Master Kimn. Studying the art of tae kwon do bas been a near ife-long challenge for the local instructor, who was put into the discipline by an older brother wbile growing up in Korea. I-is first study - chosen by is brother - was judo, wbicb be continued to study through igb sehool. After graduating frorn igb scbool, be Councillor Rick Maîbocuf says it's time to move on in is letter to The Champion regarding a column by Richard Vivian- a colurnn he says he takes offence to. l'Il tel you what 1 take offence to, and it wasn't Mr. Vivian's col- umn. The column was right on the rnoney and especially poignant, considering he supports non-smok- ing, but not at the expense of dernocracy, wbicb be revealed waon't being served. I take offence 10 a council that takes away our freedom of choice by legisiation. I take offence to a councillor wbo defends buffoonery within bis own ranks. I take offence to having 10 wait until next November to exercise my democratie right. I take offence to a mistake being made and a council that doesn't have an interest in fixtng mi. I want il recorded now who voted for what at the council meet- ing so 1 can properly exercise my demnocratie right when thc ime comes. I don't care about stupid rules of order that have no point. Why wouîd somebody challenge a motion for a recorded vote, as did Councillor John Challinor, unlesa they knew a mistake bad been made? According to Mr. Malboeuf, only somebody from Uic winning side of the vote can ask for another vote. Why would tbey? Tbey already got wbat they wanted. I want to know, and other citi- zens want to know who supports or doesn't support the bylaw and who supported and didn't support a review of it. l'm flot interested in Mr. Malboeuf's conjecture of Art Melanson's intentions. Mr. Melanson already toîd The Champion that he did have is hand up, so there's no dîsputing it. It was missed when the vote was counted, and he admitted it wao missed, so damn weII do it again. Don't hide behind points of order and tell us that's democracy at work. This town counicil is overstep- ping its bounds. They're making decisions that we've not mandated thern to make. Did we elect representatives s0 they couîd put people out of busi- ness? If customers at bars didnt want smoking, they wouldn't go there. We can decide for ourselves. Move on? We'lI move on wben we're good and ready, thank you. lt's obvious this bylaw doesn't bave the support of the people wbo are affected by it, or else we would move on. A cornmittee spent four-and-a- baif montbs coming up with this bylaw? Ask some of the people on the committee if the proceso was fair. Ask the bar owners wbose business is being ot wbether they think the committee did its job. l'Il tell you wbat. I don't want council making decisions of this magnitude. 1 say repeal the bylaw -and have a plebiscite at the next election. We'll decide what we want on major issues, not you. As far as l'm concemred you've blown your chances. You've blown it when we've gone without enough recreational ice facilities for the 23 years 've ived here. You've blown it when a new arena being built doesn't have sat- isfactory seating. You've blown it when an institu- tion like Quality Greens closes down due to circumstances that could bave been avoided. You've blown il when we can't even drive down Main Street witb- out taking our life in our hands. You've blown it wben we can't get water you can sec througb. Move on? Who are you telling 10 move on'? We'Il tell you when it's lime to move on, even if we have Io wait until next November. said he decided to make martial arts is life and moved over into tac kwon do. U tNc 1I started thinking, maybe l'Il become a 0'J h A master," he said, adding he intends to, visit lJ Korea next year to test for bis eigbth degree black belt.N While there are aduit students at the academy. the bulk of Master Kim's pupils are children. Tbrough the study of tae kwon do, Master Kim said, cbildren becorne better prepared to face challenges and build moral character that stays with tbem tbrougbout their lives. -I have three principles -I teacb con- trol, manners and patience." be explained. "Afler training, tbey (young pupils) will have a strong mind - the 'l can do it' style and are belping eacb other and show respect to their parents." Even short-time student Bruce Moore- wbo has studied under Master Kim since June- said tae kwon do bas impacted bis if e. -1Thts s a sport founded on principles whicb are as valid today as they were 2,000 years ago when the sport ftrst evolved," be told The Champion. -Those things bold great appeal to me as an individual today. Over and above those philosophical issues. the physical aspects of the sport are great. You go up the ftness Photo by GRAHAM PAINE curve pretty fast."
