Merry schools close did littie to comfort parents Tuesday night. Some 60 parents camne out to an open bouse at Milton District High School, organized by the boards School Closure/Consolidation Study Commniltee, to look at the options the cnmmittee bas provided regarding the relocation of stu- dents upon closure. Although the committee provided sever- al options for each sehool, the majority of parents weren't satisfied with any of them - except 10 remain put. 1I just dont want 10 sit and complamn but l'm really sbocked by the options," said Carol Doherty, whose daughter attends the French Immersion programn at Martin Street. "l'm surprised there arent a wîder range of options. There is insufficient tiine to digest tbis. I dont feel the committee acted in good faith because the consulta- tion process was too short." The committee held two public meetings for eacb school earlier in the month to hear from delegates about the propose closure. The Martin Street options include ail stu- dents directed to Robert Baidwin Sehool, French Immersion students directed t0 E.W. Foster Schooi, Robert Baldwin Sehool or J.M. Denyes Sehool and Englisb stsidents dtrected to J.M. Denyes Sehool and Robert Baldwin Scbool. The Percy W. Merry options include stu- dents directed 10 E.W. Foster Sehool, Oakvilîe sehools River Oaks, Posts Corners and Munn's Sehool or ail students to Samn Sherrati Sehool. Emery Robidoux, whose son attends tbe French Immersion program at Martin Street, said he's stili waiting for the board 10 explain why the sebool is slated for dlo- sure. 'mr still confused. And in considera- lion of ail the development pîanned, most of it may not be until 2003, 2004 but then il will explode. I îhink the board is being sbort-sighted." Currently, Martin Street is operating near capacity witb 250 students, with 106 of those students bused in from outside the sebools catchment area - mostly for the French Immersion program. Percy W. Merry currently bas 92 students enrolled, below the capacity of 220 stu- dents. Annette Page, who bas two cbildren attending Percy W. Merry, told The Champion she felt the sehool should be used as a holding facility until a new sehool is built. "But if I had 10 decide on an option, I wouîd go with D because ail the students would move together. I don't want my kids 10 attend an Oakville sehool." Parents were able to take home comment forms 10 submit to the board stating their preferred option, should the sehools close. Ail forms must be submitted 10 the board by Monday in order for the committee 10 review the responses before making a rec- omamendation to the board November 6. A board decision on the fate of the two sehools is expected November 20.
