Umm VClosing rural school would break up one huge family, say parents By RICHARD VIVIAN The Champion Parents presented both an emo- tional and factual plea to keep Percy W. Merry School open dur- ing a closure/consolidation com- mittee meeting Thursday. Several parents expressed great concemr over having their children moved to larger sehools. which, for the most part, are already over capacity. "Everyone will agree that mass produc- tion assembiy uine factories using mini- mum quality ingredients and minimal stan- dards of workmanship will produce a uni- form, high volume product that meets min- imum standards on the market. 1$ this where our school system is beading?" asked John Ford, who has a grandchiid attending the school. "By far, the mosi effective learning envi- ronment is the family unit. When you cou- pie the incredibie amounit of positive inter- action between ail the age groups withmn the student body with the dedication of our teachers, Percy Merry becomes one huge family unit that welcomes and encourages each child." One of the benefits of keeping Percy Meny open is the bounty of environmental features that surround the school, added parent Keith Baker. "The urban encroachnient on rural socie- ty, as well as the immediate proxtmity to nature... makes Percy Merry an ideai loca- tion for hands-on learing," he said, point- ing to the school's proximity to Drumquin park. "The availabiliiy of an area in which life systems can be studied through direct observation is immediately available jusi by going oui the back door." Percy Merry would also be ideal as a holding school while residential develop- ment in Milton and north Oakville contin- ue 10 explode, said parent Janet Trindor. "Could the committee recommend that a letter be sent specifically to parents at Sam Sherrait, E.W. Foster, Post Corners and W est Oak Trails te, announce that parents Scan enroil their kidt here if they prefer a smail school model? Percy Merry is jutt a short car/bus ride away," she said. "Creative solutions will relieve some of the overcrowding in these four schools and allow our children t0 remain in their home school to be educated with their friends.'" The committee bas also received a letter from astronaut Colonel Chris Hadfield - who attended the school as a child- ask- ing them 10 keep the sehool open. "Education is one of the vital gifts that we give our children. It opens their minds to the endless possibilities of the universe and il gives themn the skills to puck back the edges of what we sec as possible. As a Canadian growing up in rural Ontario, 1 was the lucky recipient of such an educa- lion, there in a country school with my peers.' he wrote from Russia, where he's currently stationed. If the scbool is closed, there's a concem that the chîldren will be separated from their classmnates and distributed to several different schools in Milton and north Oakville. 'Mis concept - although no specifie see MEETING on page 12
