Cheeses, Galen Harris presented a petition he started to Halton District School Board officiais Tuesday night. In the span of one week, the youngster gathered 101 signatures from fellow stu- dents in hopes of convincing board mem- bers to keep Martin Street School open. About 60 residents camne out to the sec- ond and final public meeting of the boards School Closure/Consolidation Study Committee to express opposition to the proposed closing of the 82-year-old school. Fifleen delegates appeared before the committee to convince members ont to close the school. One of the delegates was 6-year-old Ann Allore, who told board officiaIs she didnt want so spend extra time on the school bus travelling to another school. "We have a computer lab. a great play- ground and lots of room to non outside. 1 dont want to move to a new school next year. 1 know the teachers, the secretary and the custodians. The teachers still ask how my sister is doing and shes now as W.. Dick. If you care about a little kids feel- ings, please dont close my scbool." Galens father, Randy, said the Martin Street family is a community, nos a catch- ment area. "We are trusting you will make the right decision," he said. "You won't just be clos- ing the sehool, you would be destroying it. When I heard it might be closing, 1 shougbt it was crazy. lsn't shere the possibility for re-building? Plus Milton is growing rapid- ly. Shouldn't we be building instead of destroying?" As a former Martin Street student. Sarah MeDuffie told the committee she had many fond memories of ber time spend inside the sehool walls. "The sehool offers quality education, period. The relationship between staff and students is positive and students and par- enta feel valued. Please dont let another big box sehool bc buiît as Martin Streets Sexpense." Sue Leeder said sheill consider sending -,her children to private sehool if Martin Street is shut down. "Seveni years ago, when my children frts attended the sehool, I defended the public sehool system to my friends who enrolled their children in private sehools or had them home-schooled. Now 1 cant defend the public sehool systemn to the private and home-schooled families. Now 'm consid- ering what other options are available. 1 feel my sons welI-being is being compro- mited.' Former town councillor Colin Best told the committee Central Milton Holdings is looking to build low rite and single family homes on 77 acres of land just a kilometre west of the sehool. "This could mean over 350 more chil- dren living in the Martin Street Sehool area within kilometres,' he said, adding con- struction isn't scheduled to commence until late 2004. Committee members are alto consider- ing closing Percy W. Merry Sehool. The cormmittee will hold an open house Tuesday as Milton District High Sehool to present alternative proposals for the desig- nation of students should the sehools close.
