"Look' who's growing now, with no end in sight By FANNIE SUNSHINE The Champion Paul Lamnontagne has tumned a once-dying business into an ever-growillg enterpnise. "I was hired because the company was in debt," said the president and CEO of Look Communication tnc. in an interview from Montreal. "We were very fortunate we came out okay, thanks ta the support of our creditors." In 2000, Look found itself in $150 million in debt aller it was unable ta raise money ta pay for huge capital expenditures ta build a network and caver the costs associated with providmng equip- ment ta new customers. The company had ta ask the Ontario Superior Court for protection from Look's creditars. Laok came out of bankruptcy protection in February - after Teleglobe and Telesystem bailed them out - and was forced ta restructure ta survtve. Nowadays, Mr. Lamontagne is keeping busy making sure the wireless cable and Intemet com- pany is offering the best possible service ta its 160,000 customers in Ontario and Quebec. 'Digital television is becoming mainstream," he said. "Customers want a lot of television for only a little bit. You can get al the local channels and ai the specialty services far $3095 a month. Its really unheatable." Recently the company launched LookBiz.ca, which offert businesses high-speed Intemet access, he added. He said the company is re-building its culture and arganizatian araund four key abjects - best network. best salutians. best employer and best service. Ta better imprave custamer relations, Laok held an open bouse at its head office an Lawson Raad last month. Customers were invited ta tour the technical operations, including the satellite 'dish fam', National Monitoring Centre, Technical Support Centre and corporate offices. The 1,000 individuals who came out for the open bouse also had the chance ta meet support staff and the management team, as well as ask questions. I was really pleased that ta many people from across Ontario turned out for the event," Mr. Lamontagne contmnued. "This kind of open-door attitude is quite rare in the telecommunications industry these days. We want ta make aurselves accessible to our cus- tomers. We wanted aur customers ta get ta know us better and ta see the operation of the campa- ny, which they normally wouldn't sce. The open house is proof of our commitment ta providing our customers with the best and most approach- able customer service. We certainly plan on hast- mng more of these events in the future." Mr. Lamontagne said he believes Look has remained successful due in part ta excellent cus- tomer service and a growing demand for wire- less communication. "lIt the end, customners want a company that will answer the phones and have answers ta their problems. Thats the kind of company we are." The Milton Canadian Champion Web site.
