Youths to address mental illness this coming week Suicide is the second Icadiiig cause of death for youth and the only age group in Canada where the rate is on the rise. Promoting awareness and getting youth talking about suicide and mental illness cao be a real challenge. To help promote Mental lllness Awareness Week October 6 to 12, the Halton Region 1-ealth Department will offer the Net Halton/Talking About Mental Illncss program for high school students throughout the region. The goal of the program is to raise awareness and decrease the stigma of men- tai ilness. Youth Net uses traincd youth facilitators to lead discussion groups regarding mental wellness. healthy coping strategies and youth friendly resources. The program will also involve guest speakers who will share personal experi- ences with mental illness.
