CH's executive committee approved the funding to, be taken front the conservation authority's water capital reserve at its meeting September 12. The recommendation wiIl go before the board of directors meeting Thursday for final approval. Last fali, CH developed a Greenlands Strategy ini hopes of better protecting envi- ronmentally and ecologically-sensitive lands and natural ecosystems within the CH watershed. A report was to have gone through to regional council this month seeking approval for the project funding. However, because Halton Region is currently work- ing on its own Water Greenlands Strategy encompassing alI four municipalities, it believes CH's projeet is a duplication and decided against funding it. Regional Charman Joyce Savoline said in an interview with The Champion that the Region and CH 's strategy plan are one in the sanie, and the Region wouldn't fund identical projeets. "I wish there was more communication relayed," she said. But during the executive committee meeting, CH CEO Theresa Maguire- Loa. NISSAN UNCOVER THE NEW 2003's Garber said the conservation authority's strategy will be completed on a watershed basis as opposed to the Region's. which will be done on a municipal boundary basis. CH's strategy will also focus on the ele- ments of a watershed required for environ- mental health, she said. 'Me plan wili iden- tify a number of issues, including lands currently owned and managed by the con- servation authority which include forests, wetlands and valley lands. It will also meclude regulated lands that aren't publicly owned, such as wetlands and valley lands and lands that need envi- ronmental protection. The goals of the Greenlands Strategy is to determine the natural heritage systemn for the watershed of CH and the extent these lands should be in publie ownership or protected through other methods. It also aims to identify and proteet envirofnmental- Iy and ecologically-sensitive lands through land acquisition, to proteet or recreate his- torical natural ecosystemns and to ensure CH lands are managed appropriately. In January, a presentation on the natural heritage systemn component recommenda- tions of the projeet will be made to the board of directors. Then in January, 2004, a presentation of the entire Watershed Greenlands Strategy will be made to the board of directors. It's expected to, be approved and implemented at that time. U%
