Notice to members of the public wishing to serve on the Halton Region Accessibility Advisory Committee In compliance with the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001, (ODA) Halton Region is creating a committee that will focus on the identification, removal and prevention of barriers to people with disabilities. The Halton Region Accessibility Advisory Committee (HRAAC) will advise Regional Council on the preparation, implementation and effectiveness of an annual accessibility plan. The ODA will be proclaimed into full force on September 30, 2002. The purpose of the ODA is to improve opportunities for people with disabilities so that they can fully participate in the life of the province. The ODA also requires that each municipality prepare an annual accessibility plan that will address the identification, removal and prevention of barriers to people with disabilities. Each municipality with a population of 10,000 or more must establish an Accessibility Advisory Committee. Halton Regional Council invites applications from members of the public who are interested in serving on the Halton Region Accessibility Advisory Committee. Council is seeking two volunteers from across the region to serve on the committee in the capacity of Member-at-large. The majority of the members of the committee must be people with disabilities. People with disabilities and family members of people with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be residents of Halton. The main purposes of the Committee are: . To advise Council on the preparation, implementation and effectiveness of its annual accessibility plan . To advise Council on other accessibility related issues within the Region An Open House will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2002, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Halton Room at the Halton Regional Centre, 1151 Bronte Road, Oakville. Last year, Halton Region employees raised more than $155,000 for the United Way, an increase of $16,372 over 2000 which far surpassed the traditional increase.
