John Stevens, 51, of Burlington is the first confirmed case of infection in Canada. A blood sample tested at the National Microbiology Lahoratory in Winnipeg indicated the presence of the virus. The bird-borne disease, which spreads to people via infected mosquitoes, can cause serious ilinets includmng fever and inflam- mation of the brain.
