Good story can help calm down miosC ti rsL-utay -oÏ -scnoot iLlels Back to school can be an anxious ime for families. Worries can be based on first-day-of-school jitters or getting back into the swing of leamning and finiding information f'or sehool projecîs. Parents may feel anxious about new challenges their children are facing. There are sources at the Milton Public Library to help ease fam- ilies' transition mbt the fll season. A good story can help children lessen their school-inspired nerves and we have many great picture books with sehool themes. 'Emilys First 100 Days of School' by Rosemary Wells or'Froggy Goes to Sehool' by Jonathan London both follow the characters first days at sehool. The confident 'Chrysanthemum' ns unhappy with ber first days ai sehool but she perseveres and triumphs in Kevin H-enkes' adorable tale. The library offers a large collection of 'new reader'-graded books to get kids back into the swing of learning. Reading can be as easy as 1-2-3 by visiting the 'Easy Reader' section of the library. Easy Reader books are graded by library staff into three levels. Each level is posted on the spine of the book with a large stieker for easy identification. Level I offers simple vocabulary with large text and many pic- tures. Reading Level 2 offers children more text and some longer words, but still relies on picture eues. Finally. extensive text and even chapiers are offered in the Level 3 readers that also have fewer pictures and somewhat more detailed plots. Easy Readers provide a very good staring point for the primary grade student whose confidence will build while progressing through each level. The non-iction books in the childrens area can be invaluable resources for sehool projeets and asstgnments. Wbile the library doesn't directly support the scbool curriculum. the library does supplement educattonal resources with many items available for research, which in tomn can also be the source of pleasure reading. Brilliant photography and engaging text cao be found in many of these items. Take a look at the 'Small World', 'Science Alive', or 'Arty Facts' series of books. The 'Parents Comer' is housed in the chldren's area and is a special collection developed by staff to help parents quickly find information of high interest to them and their families. lncluded in the collection are books and videos that deal in topics front tod- dlers to teen years and everything in between. Presehool children, toddlers and babies cao look forward to the stan of their autumn learning season. 100.
