26--The Canadian Cnampion, Frday JuIy 12, 2002 Recipients of cash from Healthy Projecta aimed at making Halton a better place to live and work received a $252,000 cash injection recently, thanks ta the Healthy Community Fund. The funds are provided by a number of community partners, mncludmng the four area municipalities, Halton Region, the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the United Way. "Part of our mandate at Halton Region is ta work with our partniers in the coin- munity ta help improve the quality of life for al our residents," Regional Chair Joyce Savoline said in a press release. "The Health Community Fund is a prime exainple of how we can ail work together to provide much needed pro- grans and services in our communi- ties." A totai of 15 groups throughout the region will receive the alocated funds. Recipients impacting Milton include the Halton Community Invesiment Partnership, which is getting $50,000 (over two years) for consultants ta develop best practices models. Parents and families living with AIDS wiIl aiso receive $9,000 ta hire a prject coordinator for the Miriam Group - which holds group meetings ta promote heaithy living. Furiher funds are going ta the Expressive Art in Long-Term Care Facilities praject. Activity departments at these facilities will receive $17500 ta establish art programs responsive ta res- idents with dementia. The Halton Music Therapy Program is getting $73500 (over three years) ta cover support staff and transportation costs related ta bringing their services ta mental health survivors. "The groups that were awarded fund- ing clearly autlined plans that involved cammunity participation and joint plan- ning betwecn graups," commented Burlington Councillor Rick Craven, chair of the Healthy Cammunity Fond. Additionai funding recipients with a Milton influence inclode the Hatan Database Ca-ordination Project, which is geting $50,000 (aver twa years). The $1,500 top prize was awarded to Gillian Dicesare and Kimberly Hall of Burlington Central High School for their dance studio plan, Dance Variations. Second prize of $1.000 went to Matt Jones of Burlington Central High School for Quick Goal Soccer Facilities. Third prize of $500 was awarded to Chris Beaulieu of Bishop Reding High School in Milton for Big Air Skate Park.
