Obstetric serv- ices will rciumn to Milton District IlHospital (MDII) July 22 following J Dr. Gien H-unters lrom specialiL;cd "li*s great being ' back.l1should be back to the way 1 rGenHne used to practice. r inHne where Id he able to go home for lunch and sec the kids a lintle bit more." the long-time Miltonian said of once again working in town. Before attending McMaster Medical Centre for specialized training in obstetries and gynecology, Dr. Hunter operated a family practice in town for eigzht years. As a family doctor, he was involved in a lot of obsteirie work and decided that was what he wanted to focus his practice on. "I had to think about t for quite a while. Its a big decision to go back (to sehool> for residency training," he said. "There's an excitement to it. Obstetries hasn't changed a lot on the last 1,000 years, but it's still a very exciting part of medicine to be in. You're usualiy dealing with fairly happy events." Dr. 1-unter will maintain an office out of the Commercial Street Medical Building to tend to patients for prenatai care, pre-con- ceptual and antepartumn counseiling, as well as gynecological care. Child deiivery services will be out of MDII. With Dr. Hunter's retumn to Milton, local patients won't have to travel Io Oakvillc- Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) for obsietrie and gynecological services any longer. "This is a great thing to be available again for anyone who want's to deliver close t0 home," the docior said. "As a eommunity. this service is going to be even more deiiïanded as the population grows. 1 sec this as a core pani of any coru munity hospital- obstetrics." The trip to Oakville becamne necessary last October. when Dr. Sandy Sharrna moved his birthing procedures to OTMH, citing a heavy workload as Miltons sole obstetrician. Dr. Sharma was to retumn to MDH upon the arrivai of a second obstetrician, but will mnstead move bis entire practice to Oakville Monday. Patients currently seeing Dr. Shanna in Milton will either have to drive to Oakville or swîtch to Dr. Hunter through a referral from their family physician. Recruitmnent of a second obstetrician for MDII is underway and is expected to bare fruit by next summuer. "When 1 was a GP? (general practitioner), how 1 practiccd then isn't going to be much different than how 1 practice now. 1 was on- eall quite a bit, so, it kind of becamne a way of life," Dr. Hunter said, adding there are systemns in place with OTMH should he require time off. "When 1 do need a breather, l11 be able Ion get it. Any physician, no matter what field they're in, has to pace himself and be careful that they don't burn out."
