6 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, JuIy 2, 2002 SCOMMENT Education director 's salary hike puzzling t seems curious that the Halton District School Board, the same board that mounted a very public campaigît to informn us about public education funding shortages, is stili intent on paying its education director consecutîve salary increases of more than 8.5 per cent. As the scbool board tackled the unenviable task of chopping $4 mil- lion from its 2002-03 budget to avoid a deficit, neither a freeze nor a reduction of Dusty Papke's 2002-03 base salary of $1 65,000 was arnong the cuts trustees considered. In fact, Mr. Papke will see his salary jump $1 3,000 corne September. This after he received a base salary bump of about $ 12,000 at the start of the 2001-02 school year. No one is questioning Mr. Papke's value here, but rather the impres- sion that his salary and the boards fundmng position seem to contradict one another. As the leader and highest paid employee of the board, per- haps he should step forward and provide a prudent example for others to follow during these lean times. We respectfully submit that its high time this board started putting its money where its mouths have been - back in the classroom. Having grown up in Milton. I can recal many siories rcgarding Dr. Kennetb Bradley. Some people speculate there's a silent code within the medical pro- fessiont in regard 10 reporting sus- pecîed collcague incompetence. It seems to me ibat if bis col- leagues had initiated complaints, the senseless deatbs may not have happened. However. if ibis is indecd not the case, but ibat be was rcporied by colîcagues over the years, then 1 suggest ibis presents an even more troubling problcm. The greatesi role of tbe medical n,,-ess.uin is todo whatsinlthe best ing of suspecîed incompetence of fellow doctors and other bealth care workers.
