By MURRAY TOWNSENO Special ta The Champion At least they Iooked good. Decked out in their new maroon and silver uniformas, the expansion Milton Maraudera played their first-ever game in the Northern Football Conference and lost 65-O. With an estimated 300 fans in attendance at Bishop Reding Secondary Scbool on a perfect Saturday aternoon, the Maraudera had the msfortune to open against the defending Canadian champion Oakviile Longhorns. "At Ieat we've got it ont of the way," said Milton coach Alan Colver, who had no trouble at ail finding positives from the game. "Wh)ven you play the two-time Canadian champions, you know you're going to be in for a real rough day, score-wise. Oakville is the class of Canadian amateur football." Coulver - who has been around the league for years, and was the defensive coordinator for the Mega City Mad Dogs ast season - sald the resuit was, "better than expected." Were the Milton players discouraged? "I don't think it will be a problem one littie bit. They ail got together and tocialized afterwards and it was ail encourage- ment. Improvements are going to be comiàng," said Colîver. "lt's a leaming process al the way along. Everybody's just gomng to have to do the basies that we stated off with, and we'il start to improve as we get some more games and reps." Coilver praised several members of the team, includmng, Mike O'Brien, a teacher at Milton District Higb School, who had tome boomting ponts. He als o singled out the Unes. "In this league, the line work is crtical, and our defensive line was very good and our offensive line was really good. That's what you have to have." The whole offensive line is from Milton District. Andrew Todd is the center, the guards are Clint Stanfield and Martin Pyle, and the tackles are Mark Dow and Norm CoUIver. If you take this gaine out of the equation, Collver said he expeots the Maraudera to be very competitive. In their only exhibition gane they lost just 10- 1 to Beleville, an 80-yard pass play being the difference. The ruies are a combination of Arerican and Canadian foot- ball, veiy similar to high school football. They play four downs, but use 12 men on the field, unlimited motion, and Canadian kicking miles. The Maraudera wiil be back in action Sunday aftemoon at Oshawa, before heading back home to face the Markham Raiders the following Saturday. T'he team's Web site is www.eteamnz.conv'MitonMaratiders. Junior Red Sox run hot and cold at Mississauga tourney Miltons junior boys basebaîl teato enjoyed a feast or famine weekend at the Mississauga North Toumamnent. The Red Sox were equally explosive and non-exis- tent at the plate - finisbing round-robin play with an even two wins and two lusses to narrowly miss advancing to the semîfinals Sunday. In a Saturday aftemoon battle with Mississauga South West that was essentially for final four entry, the local lads were al but completely silenced - witb Nate Perrott recorded the only bit - en route to beîng witewashed 9-0. Ian Moszczak worked the mound against is former tearo and faced the lions share of punishment. While he was rather ineffective at times. a lack of defensive support - particularly in the error-nicb third inning - also factored into the bumbling defeat. "Nate was thrown out at the plate for wbat would have tied the score up early." explained manager Glenn Turner. -From there, the wbeels felI off the wagon." But Milton would finish up on a higb noie Saturday evening - outdistancing Oakvilles first entry team 9- 8. The Red Sox posted aIl of their mons in the fourth. Veteran Jarrett Konkle - now back trom the UIS. - got ni onl the scoring surge while highlighting the teams biggest single-inning output of the year with a tbree- ron homer was Jefi MacL-eod. Against Barries *A' squad Friday. Taylor Lawton andl John Melito clobbered solo shots in the first andi sixth- but their tearn managed just one other it on the way to falling 7-2. Recalled Turner, "We kind of started off on the wrong foot. i had hoped to throw either Adam Ahearn or Jef Macl-cod at them, but hoth had sore anns. I went with Kevin Cooper, who*s more of a finesse pitcher, and Barrie banged him around." Milton rebounded from its opening-round loss to spank league rival Guelph 7-I. Andrew Coe scattered tbree bits over six innings wbile Perrott tagged a three- mun diniger to share the offensive stage with Lawton, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of tons.
