Halton Healthcare Services (HHS), which operates the local hospital, recently aninounced a $75 million expansion plan. "Our intent is to grow Milton (hospital) to serve Milton. Milton is getting big enough to warrant it (expansion)," HHS CEO John Oliver told The Champion. "Taking a look at the population projec- tions - Milton's projected to grow about 65 per cent by 2008 - that size of com- munity is obviously going to demand a big- ger hospital. Our challenge is how much bigger it needs to be and how we're going to do it. what kind of timeline." Though no designs have been estab- lished. HSS' recently-completed Planning Parameters and Master Plan calîs for the hospital to more that double in size by 2008. "Over and above that, we need to come back into the existing hospital and renovate about haîf of it- about 5 1,000 square feet of renovations," added Allan Halls, HSS senior vice-president. "We'll be changing the use of spaces. opening up spaces for other functions." Avatlable beds at the facility will increase from 85 to about 118 in that time franse. The biggest part of the expansion involves out-patient care, which will sec a 500 per cent increase once the project is complete. Out-patient services include the emer- gency room, diagnostic imaging, physio- therapy and a variety of clinies. With this new space and increased demands, HSS alto imtends to establish mental health services and an in-patient rehabilitation program at the hospital. "The community is going to be of a suf- ficient size to warrant a unit and support itself," Mr. Halls said of the intended serv- ices. Thie expanded hospîtal will alto help to attract family doctors and specialists to Milton, Mr. Oliver added. "That recruitment will be going on as we begin the expansion."
