The Milton native recently accepted an assistant coacbing position witb the Ontario Hockey League's Brampton Battalion- who're looking to rebound from a rather dismal 2001/02 season. In French, the Battalion not only gets a seasoned major-junior assistant but one wbo's also got experience in the E a s t c r n Conference wherc they'll compete next sca- son after four years in the West. "I arn really happy to get a coach wbo has OHL experience, especially some- body wbo bas experience in tbe Mark French east," said Stan Butler, Brampton's bead coacb and director of bockey operations, in a press release late last week. "Mark cornes igbly recommended by Mike Kelly, wbo was my assistant at tbe World Junior toumament tbe last two years." Tbirty-year-old French was an assistant coacb under Mike Kelly for tbe past tbree seasons witb the North Bay Centennials and was recently reappointed as an assis- tant coacb for two more years witb tbe Ontario Under- 17 team. He spent one season as a player at Mankato State University in Minnesota before moving on to play at Brock University. He was the Badgers' bead coach in 1997/98 and spent tbe following season as an assistant at the University of Guelpb. Frencb will report for duty at tbe Bunker August 15.
