Police release details of huge bank cardfraud based in Milton By FANNIE SUNSHINE The Champion The Halton Regional Police Service Fraud Bureau is search- ing for at least three suspects believed to be involved in an Easter weekend bank card scam in Milton. A man gained empînyment at a gas sta- tion in Milton in February and police said he began -skimming" the debit cards on the side when customers came in to pay for their gas purchase. "The employer wasn't aware of the sus- pect's exploits," said Det. Sgt. Don Cousens at a press conference held at 12 Division Wednesday. The clerk quit his job ai the gas station March 28 and the skimming scam was discovered over Easter weekend. Police aren't releasing the man's name ai this point because he was using an alias that belonged to another individual. Police also wouldn't release the location sale: report Milton tap water is good to drink, says the Mînistry of the Environment. Water quality testîng for Milton- between January and March- indicates the water supply met ail health-related Ontario Drinking Water Standards. The Milton water supply - which comes fromn both Lake Ontario and wells - s tested daily. with resuits released on a quarterly basis. See photos of three suspects on page 26 of the gas station. The gas station clerk was able to access the accounts by using a skimming machine that can copy data from the mag strip on the back of the debit card, police said. The card would be swiped through a separate, smaller device and the informa- tion would be downloaded onto another card with the customers information. The clerk would obtain the Personal Identification Number (PIN) of the card by watching the customer punch it in. The man and an unknown number of associates used information from more than 300 cards - the majority from Milton residents - to withdraw cash and deposit empty envelopes at banik machines throughout the Greater Toronto Area, Det.
