May12 487 [Auner Am Citizen-based committee attempts to bridge gap between police and community in Milton By FANNIE SUNSHINE The Champion It's important for the communi- ty and the police to work together to combat crime and concemrs alike. And the retumn of the Milton Community Consultation Committee (MCCC) is geared to help along that process. After a two-year hiatus, the MCCC is back in full force. "Anybody who is interested in maintaining the quality of community life can join the comn- mittee," said MCCC Chair Greg Nelson. "It's not just for crime-related issues. We deal with traffic, public safety and health concemrs. Its very pro-active.' The group, which includes representatives from Halton Regional Police, the Milton Fire Department and town council, meets every third Tuesday of the month at the Milton police station (12 Division) on Childs Drive. Its a relaxed format," Mr. Nelson contin- ued. "The police will give us an update on the (crime) trends that are visible in the communi- ty. Some individuals will present information on various topics to the committee. At one of our previous meetings we discussed the risc of bave a high school student on the committee and we needed someone from that age group to guide us as to what kids are thinking and doing. We want to close the gap between the kids and the police." Every concemn raised at the meetings will be addressed, he added. "Traffie is always a concemn, along with speeding. Those concemrs are funneled toward (12 Division Staff Sgt.) Gien Randail and then he will report what the police are doing in regards to those concemns. People speed quite a bit on Derry Road, so Gien said the police would increase their presence." bers, is one of the most important committees a community can have, Mr. Nelson said. "The police are only as good as the citizens who are there to help tbemn. A lot of people have concemns in the community and don't know wbat to do witb them or who to tell. Anyone is more than welcome to sit in on the meetings and join the group. 1 find it such a great honour to be involved in such a great process."
