Aoril 16, 2002 @le -,Champion wins newspaper awards at OCNA convention The Milton Canadian Champion walked away with three second- place showings at Saturday's Ontario Community Newspaper Association (OCNA) awards night. Tlhe gala was held at the Marriott Hotel in Toronto. The Champion placed second in the Generai Excellence category (6,500 to 12,499 circulation). According to the judges, "The Milton Canadian Champion impressed us with its dlean design, an exceptional use of photographs, and an overail impression of being in touch with the comnsunity it serves." The News/North Yellowknife placed first, while the Stouffviîle Tribune placed third. The Champion's long-tinse pho- tographer, Graham Paine, received second place for the Photographer of the Year award. This waa the first year the OCNA implemented such an award. Champion photographer Graham Paine won second In Ontario In the Best Sports Photo cetegory for this shot. According to judge Brain Clark, of the Kitchener-Waterloo Record, "Graham Paine of the Milton Canadian Champion covered the people of Milton from their local community to farther afield aithe Canada Sommer Games in five-year-old hockey player stood out among a number of strong pho- tos in this entry." The Oakville Beaver's Barrie Erskine placed first, while the Etobicoke Guardian's Ian Kelso placed third. Mr. Paine alto received second place for Best Sports Photo, which depicted miîd-air football action. Commented judge Grant Black, senior photographer of the Calgary Herald, "Graham Paine took a solid football photograph. The background is clean, the action peak. It pots the reader on thse field." Placing first was Sandy Poitras of the Alliston Herald and third place went to Barrie Erskine of the Oakville Beaver.
