Tlhe gala was held at the Marriott Hotel in Toronto. The Champion placed second in the Generai Excellence category (6,500 to 12,499 circulation). According to the judges, "The Milton Canadian Champion impressed us with its dlean design, an exceptional use of photographs, and an overail impression of being in touch with the comnsunity it serves." The News/North Yellowknife placed first, while the Stouffviîle Tribune placed third. The Champion's long-tinse pho- tographer, Graham Paine, received second place for the Photographer of the Year award. This waa the first year the OCNA implemented such an award. According to judge Brain Clark, of the Kitchener-Waterloo Record, "Graham Paine of the Milton Canadian Champion covered the people of Milton from their local community to farther afield aithe Canada Sommer Games in five-year-old hockey player stood out among a number of strong pho- tos in this entry." The Oakville Beaver's Barrie Erskine placed first, while the Etobicoke Guardian's Ian Kelso placed third.
