The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, Apnil 16, 2002-23 SPORTS Jr. B Mavericks solid at pre-season tourney By STEVE LeBLANC The Champion Glen Little made just one promise when training camp opened late Iast month - that local lacrosse fans could expect a competitive season from the retumning Jr. B Mavericks. And resuits from Saturday's Spartan tourna- ment served only to strengthen bis resolve on that point. Milton was arguably the most inexpe- rienced team at the pre-season showcase, but tumed at least a few heads with some highly respectable play. The Mavericks kick started the day-long tour- nament by toppling Welland 7-4 - and while follow-up clashes with Spartan and Six Nations ended in defeat, staying with two goals on both clubs was actually more encouraging that the first-round victory. "We shocked some people," said Little, of Milton's 4-2 and 8-6 losses to Spartan and Six Nations respectively. "We're going to be com- petitive. We'll be in every game." Keeping pace through rounds two and three was largely the result of stunningly strong man- to-man coverage - which is often a weakness with developing teams. Said Milton's head coach, "It was a pleasant surprise." Meanwhile, Josh Arnold - who as of now is the number one mani between the pipes rebounded from a sub-par start and was steady through the balance of the toumament, as were back-up candidates Adam Elias and Jordan Lumb. Milton struggled at times to dent the twine, but that probably had as much to do with a short- staffed bench as a lack of offensive punch. 'Me Mavericks were missing a couple of injured reg- ulars plus Kyle Goertz and four hopefuls who were ail competmng as the AII-Ontario midget hockey championships in Sudbury. Among those who stood out over the weekend were Kyle Hagel and Drew Petkoff -who both played for assistant coach Glen Flippance at the midget level in Hamnilton last year. Also, Milton is close to acquiring Mike Szpish, a promising steel-town sniper drafted first overall by Brampton's Jr. A Excelsiors. Local fans will have their fiyst opportunity to see the Mavericks this Thursday night when they bout the Mimico Mountaineers in exhibition play at John Tonelli Sports Centre. Game time is 8 p.m. Milton opens regular-season play with a two- game home stand starting next Thursday, April 25 against the Founder's Cup host Halton Hilîs Bulldogs.
