The Canadien Champion, Tuesday, April 2, 2002-3 F--erry Rd. to reach traffic f litvj-~g capacity by 2006: studies By RICHARD VIVIAN The Champion Deny Road is gettmig a face lift, at least ini part, as Halton Region looks to meet growing traffic demands. At a public meeting hcld Wednesday at Milton District High School, ares residents heard thse Region's terma of reference for ru environmental assesament (EA) rud possible road improvements on Denry Road, between Fifth Lmne rud Ninth Line. "There't a lot of cars on tIsas road rud improvements are going to have to be made," project mruager for tIse Region Nick Zervos said. "We're very early in the stages here and we're looking for your (public) input." Ise road waa identifsed ta need- ing improvements in the Halton Functional Road Network rud North Halton Transportation Study (1999) rud the Road Needa Study update (2000). According to the studies, tIse road will have reached ils capacity by 2006. Currently, between 8,200 rud 10,700 vehicles are estisnated to use tIse road each day - with 80 per cent of trafflc heading est in the momning and west tn the evening. By 2016, traffsc volumes are expected to reach 25,000 vebi- "V1hmret a lot of cars on that rSad improvments arm gig to have to be iiiae We're very eary i ti s«Ug" hmr and we're Io)oking for your (public) iput" MMU dles per day. -1This trafflc is directly attributa- ble to the growing urbru situation. A lot of commuters use this road to get to rud from work in Mississauga," said Rick Hein, sen- ior project manager for Delcan Corporation, tIse engineering flan rctained by the Region. Several improvement options are currently being considered, includ- ing widening the stretch of road to four Irues, upgrading other routes, provision of altemnative transporta- tion modes, localized intersection imnprovements; rud any combina- tion thereof. "lt's not a safe road for cyclists, pedestriru or even for vehicular traffic at tis point in time. We want to make it safe," continued Mr. Hein, pointrng to uneven shoulder widths, cracks in the pavement and poor visibility in some areaa. In deciding the best improve- ment option, the Region is consuit- ing with nearby property owners and other commenting agencies (Conservation Halton, utility com- panies, etc.). Public comment is alto bemng sought. 'he EA - currently underway and continuing mnto the spning - will alto play a major rote in the Region's improvement decision. The affects of each option on wildlife, water courses and vegeta- tion will be evaluated during the EA procets. Because of the EA and design work, any necessary construction wouldn't Iikely occur until 2005, added Mr. Zervos. Further public consultation is planned for Juste, though no date or location has been set. lImprovements to another section of Derry Road - between Bronte Road and Fifth Line - will tee the road width doubled to, four lanes. Construction is expected to begmn in 2004. Anyone wishing to comment on the proposed road improvements cru contact Nick Zervos at (905) 825-6161 ext. 7632.
