Photos by GRAHAM PAINE Haydar one of three finalists for Hobey Baker By STEVE LeBLANC The Champion Darren (Mini) Haydar is now playing the waiting game. Having done everything possible to capture this year's Hobey Baker Award, Milton's most prolific scorer still has another three days until the NCAA's top individual honour is awarded at Friday's Frozen Four banquet in St. Paul, Minnesota. The New Hampshire Wildcats' senior captain moved a step closer to the prize last week when the award corm- mittee named him one of three Hobey Baker finalists - along with St. Cloud State's Mark Hartigan and Minnesota's Jordan Leopold. Haydar can't do anything more to improve his odds of winning - since a recipient has already been decided - although many would claim that this year's efforts are already enough. Heading into this week's Frozen Four, UNH's stand- out centre leads the nation with 76 points - 31 goals and 45 assists - and sits one ahead of Hartigan. His 1.95 points-per-game average is also tops in the NCAA. And if big-game production is any kind of detennin- ing factor, the local superstar also has an edge - having shone in almost every crucial situation for the top-seat- ed 30-6-3 Wildcats. An MVP in three toumaments this season, he powered UNH to the Hockey East title with two points to eclipse arch-rival Maine 3-1 and then matched that performance to shade Cornell 4-3 and earn a berth to the Frozen Four. New Hampshire head coach Dick Urile - part of the Hobey Baker committee - feels his premier scorer has a good shot as winning while experts believe it's between Haydar and Leopold, since Hartigan is a junior. A dedicated off-ice volunteer with a number of causes including New Hampshire DARE prograrm, Haydar admits he's be excited to walk away with the Hobey Baker award but maintains that the national title would mean more. . "The national championship is definitely a higher level than the Hobey Baker," he stressed. "The Hobey Baker is for an individual and hockey is a team game." Haydar's Wildcats will have to go through their tough- est opponent in recent years - Maine - Thursday aftemoon for a shot at the national championship. The semifmal tilt begins at 1:30 p.m. and a victory would put UNH up against either Michigan or Minnesota in Saturday night's title game, which starts at 8 p.m. Both the semifinals and finals will be aired on ESPN 2.
