The Canadian Chamion, Friday, March 29, 2002-23 'AA' atoms oneC win away from Tri County titie By STEVE LeBLANC The Champion The AA major amomns have certainly been givmng fans a lot of bang for their buck. Just three nighta after scoring in the last minute of regulation time to eclipse Caledon, Milton one-upped the excitement level at Memorial Mrena Monday evenissg - delivering an overtisne vie- tory to take a two-games-to-one Iead in the best-of-flve Tri County charnpionship finals. Scott Stover once again stole thse show - something he's had an uncanny knack for doing this seaaon - with a picturesque fore- hand fake that completely handcuffed the opposing goaltender les tda a minute into sudden death and allowed the hous tW prevail 3-2. The game-winning deposit came only a few minutes after the highly reliable aniper banged up hit knee on a rather scary blue- lie collision. Stover also buried a close-range anapahot late in the first period to kick-start bis second multi-point performance of thse senies. The Wallace Pontiac Buick Winterhawks surrendered a two- goal advantage following a particularly prosperous stant - with just four shots required to notch a pair of tallies - but kept them- selves in a position to win with a couple of succesaful penalty kilîs and another credible netminding effort by Taylor Prestidge. Captain Mati Jessup was another evening standout - both on defente and while the locals were shorthanded - while also offer- ing spirited play were Mats Fratarcangeli, Tyler Lafontaine and Jeremy Price. Mark Thomson put the hosta ahead five minutes into the ganie with a low wrister. Brian Hunter and Wade McGinnis set up the overtime winner, while first-period assists went to Brayden Abraham and Mati Elliot. Caledon connected on a lengthy shot through traffic in tse dying moments of Use opening frame and then evened Use counit exactly two minutes into the second on a bottom-shelf anapahot. The balance of Use night featured tight defensive play and a cou- ple of unconverled powerplays for either aide. Prestidge weaUsered two concentrated stormt early on and overail tumed back 22 shots - teven more Usan his Caledon counterpart. During game two in Caledon Sunday, Milton gave a decent showing but were upstaged 3-1. Prettidge made about two dozen saves to keep Usings interesting. This marks Use Winterhawks' only defeat in Il Tri County playoff games. The major atomns had an opportunity to clinch Use series in Caledon Wednesday night. However, Use game-four showdown ran beyond The Champion's holiday weekend press time. Alto playing beyond Usat deadline were Milton's AA minor novices - who as of Wednesday evening were tied as one game apiece wiUs Orangeville in Useir own best-of-five Tri County final. ,-Milton trio lead 'Canes to bronze Can anyone say deja vu? For Use second straight season, Halton's AAA major novices toppled the York-Simcoe Express to secure a medal at Use OMHA championship toumament. Unfortunately, Use Hurricanes couldn't quite duplicate last year's golden performance and had 10 setle for Use bronze - shading York-Simcoe 4-3 wiUsin Use friendly confines of Use Brampton Sports and Recreation Centre Sunday momning. And like Usey have on most occasions over Use past two season1vs, a local trio powered Use medal-winning victory. Brandon Denham pulled double duty in Use Uird-place clash - acting as boUs star and hero. His latter role was delivered inside Use final Usree minutes of play, when hie went coast to cost to sink Use go-ahead goal. tiarlier on he set up goals two and Usree. Michael Sgarbossa alto stood out wiUs a goal and two assista. Hîs tally came wiUs less Usan a minute to play in Use first period- which eraaed York-Simcoc's initial lead. Meanwhile. fellow Miltonian Scott Dermnott offered a gritty two-way effort to help clinch Use bronze. While held off Use score sheet in Useir weekend-ending contest, hie led Use trio overail with six points. Sgarbossa had a handful of points while Denhamn fin- ished wiUs four. Halton had a tough time in Use round robin and managed just a single win. beating Stoney Creek 3-2 - Usanka to a Uree-point gemn from Dermott.
