ARE WE ONLY CONSUMERS? There seems go be a trend at the moment to view people as individual consumers whose desire for choice overrides the benefits of banding together as a community go meet our needs. In the past, we have aIl contributed through our taxes to provide for each other in areas like education, health care and municipal services such as water, hydro and afford- able housing. This sharing is consistent with the underlying assumptions of Christianity. A visit to the website of the United Church of Canada fmds this principle proclaimed: "God's work is not done until we have learned to live as a people in such a way that every individual is cherished and included in the well being of the community." We are being encouraged to move farther and farther away from this belief in inclusion to one of being soley concemed with our own self-mterest or perhaps just that of our immediate family. Is that the way to live a rich fulfihling life? Is jE possible to live a good life isolated from concern about the wellbeing of our fellow citizens? Last November, the people of Milton were invited to a Town Hall Meeting to learn about the issues of homelessness, poverty and affordable housing. Approxiniately 60 people from a wide varieîy of backgrounds attended. A second round of Town Hall Meetings is going to be held throughout Halton during April. This time, the focus will be on mobilizing to deal with these issues. The first of the series will take place on Tuesday, April 2 from 7:00 to 9:00 at St. Paul's United Church.
