i 0-The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, Match 5, 2002 ~ess ,/New business takes a hands-on approach By FANNIE SUNSMINE The Champion Seven years ago, Catherine Wilkinson developeda special massage tech- nique for neck and shoulder injuries. Scapular Stretcb Rotator Cuif Release' combines different massage techniques such as Swedish and Shiatsu to create the upper body treatment. "If your shoulder is frozen and you can't lifi your arn, it will bring you mobility," said Ms Wilkinson, who's worked as a reg- istered massage therapist for 22 years. "I started experimenting with different techniques on the shoulders about 14 years ago but didn't corne up with the technique until a few years ago. "What they taught us in school about shoulder and neck massages didn't seemn to meet the need of what people needed to ease the pain. I saw my technique was real- ly helping." Instead of the client lying on their front for treatment, the person is placed on their back, sbe said. "I work on the back wbile they are lymng on their back and 1 work from under tbem. Somebow I found a way for this technique to work." If the pain is muscular in nature, Ms Wilkinson guarantees the pain will disap- pear witbin three to five treatments. "If iî's a fairly new injury, witbmn the Iast six months, il might only take one treal- ment to make the pain go away. If it's an old injury it migbt take longer." Since developing hier technique, she's taughî bier specialized massage to regis- tered massage tberapy students across Ontario. She even rait bier own massage therapy clinic just oulside Ottawa for 19 years. Six montbs ago, she tossed around the ides of opening bier own clinic in town. She and bier busband recently opened Hands On Rehabilitation Services, which is located as 497 Laurier Ave. in the med- ical building. Grand opening next week Althougb the clinic bas been open for several weeks, the officiai grand opening will take place Monday. A part of the clinic will be a training cen- nre for registered massage tberapists wbo need to upgrade their skills every few years. "lt's like bow teachers and nurses bave 10 continue their education after tbey gradu- ate througb worksbops," Ms Wilkinson explained. Besides offering the Scapular Stretch - Rotator Cuif Release massage, the clinic will also offer traditional back and full body massages, lympbatic and reflexology therapy. A baif-an-hour massage costs $42. A 45- minute massage cosîs $50 and an bour massage costs $70. Currently, Ms Wilkinson is one of two registered massage tberapists working at ber clinic, altbough site hopes to hire another by the end of the year. "Once ail three of us are working, I hope to be able 10 take walk-in's. But rigbt now, you have 10 book an appointment in advance. 1 nry to keep the clinic open late so people can come in 10 get a massage after work."
