The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, February 5, 2002- ',Restrictions may ease up around on-tarm businesses By RICHARD VIVIAN Thte Champion In an attempt to boost the eco- nomic state of the agriculture industry, Halton Region is consid- ering reducing restrictions for on- farmn businesses. "The main concemr is that farm- mng, as an occupation in the rural areas, is in an economic critis," explained Ho Wong, acting direc- 10e of planning and transportation for the region. 'What they can earu from the farming operation with the depresaed commodity prices and other factors like the cost of equipruent, il is no longer econom- ical to fanin, especially for new people who want 10 go into the farming business." The on-farm business regula- tions are currently under conoider- ation as part of the Region'o Officiai Plan review. Mr. Wong said he expects to bring the issue t0 council within a matter of weeks. One posaibility being considered under the review is to broaden the field of acceptable on-farm busi- ness practices - which are cur- rently linsited 10 dry agriculture- related practices. "We have 10 try 10 balance between what we should allow and how we should allow il and still maintain thse farming activity out in the rural area and maintain. the character of it. We certainly don't want 10 bave industrial subdivi- sions out there -thaï's not our intention," said Mr. Wong, adding he would reserve further commnent until after the report for counicil is complete. "We are working with the farm- ing community 10 look at that par- ticular issue. This is stili in progreas - we're sti11 working on the details." Once the report reaches regional council, the issue will be open for discussion - in addition to a pub- lic consultation period. The Region will alto seek endorsement of any changes to the Officiai Plan from Milton town council prior ils passing. "The Town is fully involved in Use regional Officiai Plan review and is participating fuily in the agriculture review and discussion papiers," said Bill Mann, manager of planning policy for the Town. "We (Town staff) haven't come to a conclusion as of yet - we want 10 review ail Use available informa- tion and participate in round-table discussions UsaI wiil be occurring with Use agriculture industry." The Milton OfficiaI Plan- expected to be reviewed later this year - is required 10 conform, with any position taken in Use Region's Officiai Plan.
